Subject: | Tire question ? ? OFF Corvette topic. |

When down to my local Costco Tire Store to buy TWO (2) new tires for my
daughters '89 Jeep Cherokee 2WD. The rear tires were not too bad but were
getting old. They would "bump" when cold. We had 2 tires put on the front at
Costco about 12,000 miles ago and they are in great shape. I advised the
counterperson that I would like the new tires (same brand and size) put on
the front and the two front tires moved to the rear. I was advised that it
was store policy that if only two tires were purchased that they MUST be put
on the rear.
E-mailed Costco Tire and was advised that the policy was to protect ME
because when driving in rain/snow/mud the new tires mounted on the front
would double the amount "stuff" the rear wheels had to contend with,
therefore the "better" tread MUST be on the rear. Here in Apple Valley,
Calif. we have 300 plus days a year without rain/snow/ mud problems, lots of
sun. In 50 years of driving and racing I always put the "better" tires on
the front for those little things like braking, steering, control and safety
in case of a blowout. It would make even less sense to me if the vehicle
were front wheel drive. The rear tires in that case only follow along behind
and hold the rear up. Would their policy mean that IF I were pulling a small
trailer that the new tires should be on the trailer. Do Not Archive
