John, The 4+3 Tranny is basically a 4-Speed with 3 over drive gears
available via an overdrive unit mounted in the tail-shaft area of the gear
box. As you probably know these extra ratios are selected by pushing the
button in the middle of the shifter. These boxes aren't the best but I never
had any trouble with my "86" that I bought new.
Same on the digital.....Mine never gave me a problem but they had
some bad boards early on. If the dash is still working on the "85" you
probably got a good one and I wouldn't be to concerned.
Tires for these cars are expensive! Rotation is a hassle but due to
the soft rubber compounds needed to bite the road they don't last but about
25,000 miles anyway......rotated or not.
