--> Cub-List message posted by: "Rick Lutes" <rlutes@fvi.net> Bill, Thanks for the reply & sound advise on partnerships. Sounds like you have a great one! With two of you having other "traveling" airplanes, it may take the implied pressure off having the group-owned airplane available. An RV is a wonderful complement to a Cub. Both have wonderful, though very different, flying qualities and performance ranges. My wife and I own a older RV-4 also. Three partners may also be the best number for insurance expense too. Most of the quotes I've gotten really jump in price if there are more than three "named" pilots. How's the 75 hp do with two people in the Clip-wing? Would it be adequate at a 1000 ft elevation airport? Is yours a Reed or a metal spar? --> Cub-List message posted by: "Rick Lutes" <rlutes@fvi.net> Hi Phil, Sounds like perfect Cub country!. I hope to vacation in the Pacific Northwest more in future summers. What do you find to be best features of a J-5 over a J-3? I've never been in a J-5, but have looked a few. How's it compare to a PA-12? --> Cub-List message posted by: "Phil Phillips" <pphillips@kalama.com> The two features I like best over the J-3 are; 1. You solo the J-5 from the front seat. 2. The wide rear seat allows carrying two passengers if the need arises. The normal flight characteristics of the J-5 are like the PA-12. It does not have flaps but it slips easily. You can come down like an elevator, for short fields, with the slip. If I ever replace the engine, I will go with a larger one. The 85 HP does a fine job, but a few more horsepower would help. All in all, the J-5 is just a fun airplane for beating around in the hills. If you ever get to this area, you have a place to stay for sight seeing. I am 20 miles from Mt. St. Helens, one hour from the coast, and one hour from the desert. --> Cub-List message posted by: "William Davis" <rvpilot@access4less.net> Rick, The 75 HP does OK with two as long as one is not a heavy. We are at 170' msl here in FL and that helps. I think it would be OK at 1000' but not much more. The C-85 or O-200 would be better of course. Ours is a Reed conversion on a 1939 wood spar.
