Hello all!
After a little over six years of hibernation, I am beginning work on the
Piet again. We=99ve been in a condominium for about four years, and
this
winter move to a house with an oversize garage that will allow me to work
on the plane.
When I had to stop working on the plane I had put one coat of varnish on
the majority of the structure, and in some places to coats.
When I had to stop working on plane I had put one coat of varnish on the
majority of the structure, and some places to coach. As I return to the
project, I am wondering if the entire structure needs two coats of varnish
or if one coat is sufficient in the rear of the airplane. Places that will
see wear I would imagine would require two coats or three.
What is the advice of the wise?
To all my West Coast Pieter friends, I=99m now in Smyrna Tennessee (j
ust
outside of Nashville).
Is there anyone in the Middle Tennessee area building a Piet?
Thanks for the varnishing advice. I=99m sanding down the structure af
ter the
last coat and trying to determine how much to do.

Mark,
For starters I would apply enough coats to fill the grain...I didn't do that and
black mildew got in the pores which I had a hassle removing later. Second,
you can use spar varnish except for places where the fabric will touch, those
areas you should use a two-part epoxy varnish that MEK will not attack.
Good luck,
John F.

In California I'm doing 2 coats, but we don't have much rain and humidity.

About varnishing, first, I hope youre using something requiring the use of a hardener
Urethane or epoxy will show you the best chemical resistance, and of
the two urethane is better. Urethane is also better for u v (sunshine) resistance.
Two coats of a good urethane is more than adequate to seal out moisture. No real
need for sanding between coats unless surface is dirty or for appearance concerns.
3coats with 320grit sanding between coats should make it look like a piano
Any varnish in contact with your chosen finishing system must be able to resist
that chemistry so check for compatibility .

Subject: | Re: =?ISO-8859-1?Q?I=99m?= back! And varnishing the fuse... |
how m
Thanks for the replies thus far. I am using Man-o-war spar varnish to coat the
fuse.
It appears that I will need to coat the edges that will touch the fabric with a
top coat of urethane or epoxy to keep the varnish from being dissolved by the
fabric covering installation...
I have been out in the garage sanding today. After all the moves we've been through
over the last 7 years, I am trying to remember where I was in the process.
It appears I didn't do a very good job getting all of the wood covered where
I thought I had. A few missed spots in corners and such. With all of the sticks
and angles, you have to be very careful to look at every nook and cranny!
And Vic! So good to hear back from you. It was indeed your workshop in Visalia
where I first saw and sat in a Piet - yours - waiting on my plans set to arrive.
Tell Mike I said howdy. That picture is very nice!
Restarting is more challenging than I thought, as I have to rebuild the momentum
- and belief that I will actually finish this project!
Any other people using Man-O-War spar varnish to coat the wood? At the time I was
painting this it was what was recommended I believe...

Mark: not so fast on the chemical compatibility issue between your varnish and
the fabric covering system. Although I would want my fabric to be attached directly
to clean bare wood, you should first decide which covering system you're
planning to use and then read their manual or directions on prepping the wood
for cover. The Stewart system uses water as the carrier for their catalyzed
polyurethane in the covering process while the Poly-Fiber process uses VOCs as
the carrier. Once you decide on a covering system, you should be able to ask
their product rep (typically a toll-free tech line) about compatibility with
your particular varnish (alkyd resin Man-O-War) as well as getting recommendations
for surface prep. It may lower your work effort while still providing a
safe and durable fabric attachment to the wood. If, on the other hand, they
recommend that you sand the varnish off the wood surfaces first, then just put
on some music and prepare for hours of relaxing with some sandpaper and dust
