Does anyone out there know how to identify a "narrow deck" Lycoming 540
compared to the "wide deck" engine? I understand there is a difference in
either the serial number or model number.

Dear Gary,
(On the O-360's) a Narrowdeck engine uses holddown plates underneath the
nuts on the cylinder base.
A Widedeck has a fatter base itself and therefore doesn't need these beef-up
plates.
I would assume the same to be true in the 540 series. But then, I am not
100% sure.
Good Luck to you,
Konrad
