Thanks, Konrad. Yes, I am sure that's true of the 540's as well. As I
understand it the nut is different as well, since it is closer to the
cylinder on the narrow-deck engines and there is less wrench clearance. I'm
told the narrow-deck engines are actually stronger, apparently because the
bolts are closer to the cylinder, and they are preferred if one is to
increase the compression ratio to obtain more power. I was hoping to
identify the engine without looking at it so I could know what ad in TAP to
which I was going to respond. The Lycoming model number list doesn't
identify "wide deck." They do list the dash-number of the serial number as
either being -40 or -48, but that is presumably to separate the O- from the
IO- engines.

The narrow deck on the 4 cylinders use an internal wrenching nut. (12 point
socket inside a cup)
