That sump holds the hot oil in it with the intake lines going through it. I
wonder why you would gain 5HP from moving it. Same reason you dont perform
good on a hot day. cold air is better, hot oil heats this air up.

The Superior Sump was redesigned to improve flow. Lycoming's sump is not
very friendly to flowing air so Superior fixed that. The Superior sump will
always put out 5hp more than the Lycoming no matter what the temp of the
intake charge.
On another note, air moves 300 MPH through the sump. From carb to cylinder
is less than 3 feet. In our case its less than .01 of a second. How warm
can the intake charge get in this amount of time?

There is an enlargement in the sump to reduce velocity for the purpose
of converting dynamic pressure to static pressure to help the air enter
the individual tubes. Is the air doing 300 mph in that enlargement? How
much time does the air spend in the enlargement?

I've an 0-320-D3G I'm dissassembling for overhaul. All's gone well so far, but
Lycoming's Overhaul Manual makes reference to a pressure plate tool, ST-122,
which is used to split the case. Is this tool necessary, or are there alternative
means?
