--> Engines-List message posted by: "Justin" <jmw116@socal.rr.com> The EJ33 is a 260HP@5500. 6cly boxter subaru engine. There is one being put in a Cozy 4 in my EAA hanger. Search it up on yahoo for a guy named Phil, Im unsure of his last name but he is nothign less than briliant. Subject: evaluating an old engine
--> Engines-List message posted by: "Jeff Orear" <jorear@new.rr.com> List: I have an opportunity to purchase an 0320-E2D, and have some concerns I would like to get some advice on. The enging has a TT of 4000hrs, 1500 SMOH at PennYann. new chorme cylinders were installed at OH, as well as a new carb, mags, all the "usual" replaced items. From the log entry at OH, I see no reference to replacement of the camshaft or crank. Compressions are 76,79,78 and 76. Owner claims less than 1 qt of oil every 10hrs. My concern lies with the condition of the camshaft and crank, in so much as the engine has 4000 hours on it total time. No oil analysis has been done. What other concerns would you have with such an engine? the current owner states that it is a strong, smooth running engine. Reason he is selling is for a power upgrade. To me this sounds like a great engine for my RV6A. Price is very reasonable and there is enough time on it prior to another OH to have a few years of fun. What is your opinion on doing a second OH on such an engine? Pros...cons? Thanks for the advice in advance. Regards, Jeff Orear RV6A fuselage (waiting for finishing kit) Peshtigo, WI

--> Engines-List message posted by: Kent Ashton <kjashton@vnet.net> This sounds like the kind of engine you should buy cheap, put it on the airplane and keep your fingers crossed. If it has been run regularly, it might be fine for at least 500 more hours. If you really want to inspect the cam and crank, it's relatively easy to remove a cylinder and look at the condition of the cam and how clean the engine looks inside. Perhaps you can see if the lifters are spalling. It's also easy to drive out the plug at the crankshaft flange and do the SB505 inspection (pitted crank). If the crank is pitted, you could still re-plug it and use it as is on an experimental airplane, but you might want to knock the price down even more. There might be a lot more you can look at. I'm no expert. Just some ideas. --Kent --Jeff Orear wrote: >--> Engines-List message posted by: "Jeff Orear" <jorear@new.rr.com> > >List: > >I have an opportunity to purchase an 0320-E2D, and have some concerns I would like to get some advice on. > >The enging has a TT of 4000hrs, 1500 SMOH at PennYann. new chorme cylinders were installed at OH, as well as a new carb, mags, all the "usual" replaced items. --> Engines-List message posted by: "Justin" <jmw116@socal.rr.com> Just because it has alot of hours on it doesnt mean the crank is bad. Im sure it was checked properly and reground for connecting rods and pistons. Those compression #'s are great. I cant beleve you get that with that high 1500hours on it. 1QT every 10 hours is not bad at all. A high time engine is not bad as long as it was maintained.A trick I always use is during your run-up lean it out to peak performance then rich it just a tad and fly it from there, not full rich because the engine runs rich already, and you are not flyign in standard conditions so why loose HP and hurt your engine when you can save?
