Subject: | Oil filter change |
--> Engines-List message posted by: "Randy Compton" <rdcompton@earthlink.net>
Listers:
I change my oil every 3 months or 25 hours, whichever comes first. That
means that sometimes I have less than 25 hours on the oil. I'm wondering if
I really need to change the oil filter when I'm draining oil that has only
18 or 20 hours on it, but has been in service 3 months?
Thanks for any info.

Yes, Randy, I would say that is too often. Many privately owned airplanes go
to TBO after getting only one 50 Hr (or Less) oil change a year for 20
years.
Especially with the new Aeroshell 15W-50, I have no problem with you going
50 hrs/12 months whichever comes first if used for flights regularly more
than 1 hr.
For flights less than 1 hr then do 25 hrs/6 mos.
I haven't seen any engine internals that would need to go more often than
this.
Oh yeah, both Lyc and Cont spec oil filter change every OTHER oil change.
