New LS1 crate engines are available for $6k here; http://www.paceparts.com/product.asp?0=308&1=311&3=56139 $5895 here; http://www.sallee-chevrolet.com/Ascripts/pricesdata.cgi An LS6 will put out 405 hp for about $2k more. The problem is finding a PSRU that will handle > 300 hp.

As I recall the LS6 is 396 lbs and the LS1 weighs less that that.

--> Engines-List message posted by: Nielsenbe@aol.com Well I found out belted air won't handle 400HP. They refered me to team38. I think EPI is looking the best so far for PSRU. I did find one place on the web that offers Chevy SB that is machined instead of cast. It's stronger and lighter than the LS1. As you can imagine it's 6K just for the block and it still needs to be bored, clearanced and some other prep just to start adding more expensive parts too. It would be over 10K easy but still an option. It can be bored/stroked to get over 400ci so probably more torque than the LS1. Can someone explain to me the effect of torque as far as airplane motor? It seems we all we talk about is HP but as far as street cars go torque is as important if not more so than HP. The other thought is changing the cam in the LS1 for a profile that is maximum performance about 4500rpm depending on your psru should help quite a bit for a couple hundred bucks. Thanks again, Brad http://www.epi-eng.com/GBX_TOC.htm

The last contact that I had with them indicated that there was somne other project in front of it. Nortwest-Aero's chevy belted PSRU is rated at 350 hp. I asked if that was continious and they replied "until the fuel runs out". They are also are selling a gearded PSRU for the Subaru but it's not near 350 hp. Real World Soluitions is developing a gear reduction drive for higher horsepower rotaries such as turbo charged 13Bs and 20B 3 rotor engines. Will these hit 350 hp? http://www.rotaryaviation.com/Gear_red_intro.htm

B is 2.176 : 1 and C is 2.85 : 1. They are both in-line planetary drives which would probably put the valve covers throught the top of the cowl unless you inverted the engine. Tracy Crook, RWS

--> Engines-List message posted by: "Gary Casey" <glcasey@adelphia.net> <<You can get high quality aftermarket aluminum engines based on the tall-block version of the bb Chevy with up to about 680 cubic inches. One of these engines with low compression and a normalizing supercharger or turbo might make a really good high torque, low rpm engine. Jim>> Lots of good comments in reply to the original LS1 question. My overall conclusion of the reason one would put a conversion in their airplane is the same one that justifies building the airplane itself - "because you want to." There is probably no reason; cost, reliability, or whatever that makes it go one way or the other. Fuel consumption is a wash, except that I believe the rotary will still burn more than either other alternative. I think that up to 300+ hp the small block can be built in a direct-drive turbocharged configuration lighter and cheaper than with a PSRU. For 400 hp a big block would be my choice. Above 450 a turbine would make more sense. Gary Casey

--> Engines-List message posted by: Nielsenbe@aol.com Well I checked out the camdrive web site. 11K for the psru seems a little excessive. It looks like a real nice unit but it's 78lbs and expensive also. Thanks for the link though I am getting a good page of bookmarks for research. Brad
