My vote would be for a direct-drive inverted turbocharged big-block Chevy.
At 500 cubic inches+ and with an aluminum block it should be competitive in
weight and power with anything else, although it would probably cost more
than 16K by the time you are done. I have done a lot of design work on this
configuration and the numbers are compelling. what does the M14 weigh?

Why inverted? If I go the auto engine route the 350 will be big enough. It's
rated at 350HP with standard exhaust. The plane was designed for 360HP with
alot of people using 400HP. I can make that easy with the LS1 and have more
room under the cowl. I believe most PSRU's are set for a small block setting
upright. Do you know of someone building one for a Big block inverted setup? I
didn't know chevy offered a 500ci aluminum engine either. I will have to check
into that.
Thanks, Brad

You can get aluminum derivatives of the Chevy tallblock BB engine at
displacements up to about 672 cubic inches from after market sources.

For new stock type large displacement engines,
try the Scoggin-Dickey website.

Nope, the Renesis goes in the RV-4 test Mule. If it had been available when the
decision was made on the -8, I might have gone that way for it too. A little
less power but 75 pounds lighter.

Tracy,
Does this mean you decided to go with the Renesis instead of the 3-chamber
rotary in your RV-8?
Terry
It will take some time for Mazda to fill the supply line but yes, the engine
will be available. Mechanic's net price is something like $5800. I'm
having Bruce Turrentine build me one from parts now. Engine - Turbo
matching appears to be as much art as science. Lots of turbo work going on
for automotive & marine applications but you have the chance to be first on
the aircraft turbo application of the Renesis.
