Gentlemen,
I am the third owner of a kitfox 4 1906 with a Rotax 912 ul
This plane was built in 95 yet has less than 300 hours on the plane and
engin due to problems with the engine.
I have owned it now for 5 years and have only flown 80 hours in it mostly
testing and fixing, testing and fixing.
I am now so afraid of this engine the plane just sets in my shop as it has
done for the previous owners.
My problem is that I love to fly! this is killing me.
I live in remote Alaska and there are NO Rotax mechanics anywhere, I have
spent countless piles of money paying airplane mechanics to learn enough
about my plane but get nowhere.
I have been on line for I think a hundred hours looking for help over the
years, Skystar knows nothing about the rotax and for some reason I can'r
reach a single Rotax mechanic.
surely I am not the only one who has problems am I ? what do you guys who
have them do?
My main problem: (in case your interesed)
my front 2 cylinders run dry black sooty pluggs, while my my 2 rear
cylinders run almost white.
I have done so many things to try to fix this problem with no change I cant
list them all, but if anyone has had this problem please treat me like I
have done nothing with it and ask me if I have done....whatever. I am really
at a loss here,
any help would be very gratfully appreciated,
Kyle

Hiya Mr. Kyle,
You did not put anything in the Subject area on this E-mail and my server,
and I am sure others, stuck it into the SPAM so I suggest you re-send it
with "ROTAX 912" in the subject line. I wish you good luck. I got a good
friend John Latham in Yakatait
Tom...

Kyle,
I also own a Model IV with a 912 UL. I am not familiar with the 1906
designation.
Your post is the first time I have heard of this problem. My rear cylinders
produce plug colors that are lighter than the front cylinders, but since the
intake manifolds are interconnected on each side, I can't imagine what you
may have done to try to balance the mixture, or do you feel it is a cooling
problem? Is this your only symptom or are you having other problems - rough
running, roughness at certain RPM ranges etc.
I just replaced the plug wires at 550 hours and got rid of some roughness
between 4200 and 4400 RPM. My plugs are usually amber colored in the back
and dark gray in front.
One other suggestion. You might post your question on the Matronics Kitfox
list. I think there are some Rotax service center guys monitoring that
list.
Lowell

I have the same problem, black front plugs and white rear plugs on my 912UL,
but just on the left side. My solution, swap plugs. When it starts to run
rough again, swap them again. I put in new ones each year.
I'd like to hear of a better solution

P.S. Be sure to use anti-sieze and a torque wrench, there is a lot of
swapping going on.
