      Hi List,

I recently acquired a Lycoming 0-320 E2D that has an aluminum machined device attached
to the front of the flywheel which weights 12 to 15 lbs or so. It is
about 1 and one half inches thick and about 10 inches in diameter. (I am not
at the hanger and thus my measurements are a guess)

Is there anyone with knowledge concerning this item?

The person I bought the engine from knows only that he bought it about 10 years
ago from an article in a magazine.

Thanks for your help, whomever that might be.

      Vic

It's a harmonic dampener. As the name implies, it's supposed to dampen the
resonance from the prop. If used on a plane like an RV you would also
benefit from the extra weight in the nose due to the C of G of those planes.
At least one back issue of the RVator has a blurb on this device and had
      favorable comments on it.

For those attending OSH this year, I will be touching on these
and other types at my machinery dynamics, (balancing), seminar.

List, , I found the ad for the damper in Sport Aviation under
"Propellers". This device is made by Mark Landoll and retails for $375.

I think I will try it if my weight and balance is aft.

Any other users have comments especially with and without the use of same.

      Thanks,

      Vic

Archie, would you please make a short comment on the use of the subject
      damper.

      "Vic Jacko"

Here is the deal on the Harmonic Dampener...Basically they are for wooden
props to help the momentum and obviously dampen out some of the engine
vibration, and to help move the CG forward a tad if you are pushing the
envelope a little to the rear...It has movable metal plates inside in a
      viscous fluid.

They are made and sold by Mark Landoll of 1205 Redbird lane, Newcastle, OK
73065......405-392-3847...I'm sure Mark would give you all the info you
      request.

I have a -4 with a Sensenich metal prop, decided to put a H/D on with the
aerobatic plate...It's weight is 12#...I really couldn't tell if it reduced
the vibration or not...Later I decided to have my prop and engine balanced
and removed the H/D, because they said it would interfere with balancing, so
while I had it in the prop shop, I asked them to weigh the prop and
      extension...42.5#, plus the 12# is 54.5# total...Heck, that is about what a
constant speed prop and associated hardware weighs...The advice is for all
of you out there, no matter what you fly, to have your prop and engine
balanced on the aircraft while statically running up to cruise RPM or
above...Mine operates much better now with smoothness I didn't think
      possible.....................Good luck.....................CHEERS!!!!
