I'm ready to get my Lycoming IO-540 built for my experimental and I've lost
track of comments from the list about recommendations for good engine
builders. I need a "performance" builder as I'm hoping to squeeze a little
extra power out of it. Any recommendations for the S. Cal. area? I thought
there was someone around Corona, but I can't find my notes. Any
suggestions/recommendations?

Gary,
Just beware of those shops that "port and polish". This is largely snake oil
left over from the old hot rodding days.
We have found, (especially on the O-200), that the ports and induction
system
is/are not only too large, but horribly mishapen in the head area.
The reason for such large ports and valves is to promote induction of
normally aspirated engines at higher altitudes.(above 7-8kmsl)
Most people cannot afford the labor intensive work associated with proper
flow,
which requires the complete induction and exhaust system assembled and
flowed just as
it would be installed on the aircraft, therefore must go along with "flow
balancing"
which is no more than equalizing the flow among a set of cylinders.
While this is a good direction, it may hurt total HP.
This is not a solicitation, just information generated through years of
performance work
which I pass on to others. (I am no longer accepting aircraft work).
Also, while on this subject, if a shop must lap the valves in order to
obtain
proper sealing, find another shop with precision equipment.
