--> Engines-List message posted by: "John Swartout" <jgswartout@earthlink.net> Archie- What do you think of using automotive wiring harness and spark plugs on an O-360 with dual (EMAG/PMAG) electronic ignition? Klaus Savier (Light Speed Engineering) recommends, according to Aircraft Spruce and Specialty catalog, using adapters to convert 18mm spark plug holes to 14mm to use automotive racing plugs to take better advantage of electronic ignitions. My A&P doesn't recommend using too many "experimental" items in a new experimental airplane all at once-like an experimental airplane with an experimental ignition with experimental plugs and harness, etc.-too many potential problems for a pilot to cope with in early test flights. Thanks.

I made a run of the adapters for my own use, of stainless, but believe someone makes them for resale. (perhaps AC Spruce) I largely agree with your A&P, but these items have been proven, so would not be overly concerned. Keep in mind, that you can take advantage of most electronics and run gaps as wide as .080 (or more). Remember, statistics show that hour for hour, ac magnetos fail 19-1+ vs automotive electronic ignition. (and do not need an impulse coupling to wind them up) Archie ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Swartout" <jgswartout@earthlink.net> Subject: Engines-List: Spark Plug question for Archie > --> Engines-List message posted by: "John Swartout" > <jgswartout@earthlink.net> > > Archie- > > > What do you think of using automotive wiring harness and spark plugs on > an O-360 with dual (EMAG/PMAG) electronic ignition? > > > Klaus Savier (Light Speed Engineering) recommends, according to Aircraft > Spruce and Specialty catalog, using adapters to convert 18mm spark plug > holes to 14mm to use automotive racing plugs to take better advantage of > electronic ignitions. > > > My A&P doesn't recommend using too many "experimental" items in a new > experimental airplane all at once-like an experimental airplane with an > experimental ignition with experimental plugs and harness, etc.-too many > potential problems for a pilot to cope with in early test flights. > > > Thanks.

--> Engines-List message posted by: "Archie" <archie97@earthlink.net> Statistics of two years ago indicated 19+ mag failures for every automotive ignition failure. Based on cars 1978 and up. I did not formulate any of this, but thought mag failure would be much higher. Keep in mind that aircraft have two systems vs one automotive. I would like to see an in-depth report, out of curiosity, but what is the point? It is only a matter of time before mags are relegated to the heap in modern aircraft, and based on popularity, STC'd for others.
