Hi all,
does anyone know of, or have experience with, an auxiliary/add-on fuel tank
for 172 that would fit under the rear bench? I'd appreciate any feedback,
url-s etc.
Thanks
Rumen

The Franklin conversion on a 172 is an awesome package. The Franklin 220
weighs no more than the Lycoming 180 yet is much more powerful, 6 cylinder,
turbine smooth, and inexpensive compared to the Lycoming. There are STC's for
the 170, 172, 175. Bruce Kown in Atlanta does the conversions and sells
Franklin parts.
His Franklin powered 170 cruises at 150 kts. Contact him at:

If it's an older one with a Continental, you might want to check on a
Franklin conversion. I heard a rumor that there is now an STC for the
350 ci engine & it's supposed to fit without cowl mods. Should be a lot
cheaper than a new Lyc, too.

I went to faa.gov and accessed the STC list. There are two possible aux
fuel approaches. One is baggage compartment and the other is outboard wing
panels. The options are:
STC SA615NE Installation of an 18 gallon tank in the aft baggage
compartment and fuel transfer system. 172F thru Q Models.
O & N Aircraft Modifications Inc
210 Windsock Lane
Seamans Airport P O Box 292
Factoryville, Pa 18419
STC SA1614WE Installation of one 12 gallon auxiliary fuel tank in each
outboard wing panel. 170, 175, and 172 models thru Q.
Flint Aero, Inc
1942 Joe Crosson Drive
El Cajon, CA 92020-1236
The baggage compartment installation sounds about like the one that Dave
Blanton sold in Wichita many years ago. I am not personally aware of one
that would go under the rear bench. I wasn't able to pull up the text of
the STC's but, the tanks in the outer wing panels may allow a higher takeoff
weight when fueled since they provide a relieving bending load on the wing.

The STC'd baggage compartment tank was originally obtained and owned by
Javelin Aircraft, now O&N. As I recall it has the fuel filler opening and
neck in the side of the fuselage and uses a electric transfer pump.
Probably not nearly as desirable as the wing tanks due to having fuel in the
cabin area.

Cliff
Thanks for the update. I spent 5 years with Cessna in the 60s as a Designer
and Flight Test Engineer. Dave Blanton was the owner of Javelin Aircraft.
My recollection also is that the filler was on the side of the fuselage.
Dave made a lot of ferry tanks back in those days.

Thanks Dean, Cliff for the info.
Ditto for the approach (searching the SIC list).
One always learns.
Grateful
Rumen
P.S. O&N isn't too far away, I am gonna pay them a visit one of these days.
