    Subject: OIL
--> Engines-List message posted by: WRBYARS@aol.com Hi Dan & other Listers, Last fall I put out a request on these lists asking everyone to give me input on all the oil's that they were, and or had used. My plane has a Lycoming 0-290 that had an "extensive" major when I bought it, and I had been running Shell non-detergent 40 weight for the past 50 hrs. I was getting ready to change over to Detergent soon and ask for everyone's input so I could chose the best oil for that engine and it's use; which is flown maybe 50 hrs per year and needed an oil with superior corrosion and rust protection that would remain on, and in those critical areas of the engine with minimum run down. I specifically ask for info/input on "Castrol Aviator", as I had read their ad's in different aviation publications, and I use their "Auto" version in all of our cars, trucks, etc. Many of you responded with some very good input, for which I want to thank you very much. However, no one gave any indication of using, or having specific knowledge of "Castrol Aviator". So with that lack of input I thought I'd contact my local distributors, In Tulsa and Oklahoma City, and they would provide me with different users that could give testimonials to It's virtues. However when contacted they were surprised that anyone would want to use "Castrol Aviator", which they didn't sell to anyone, and they didn't know very much about, except that it was $10 a case higher than "Shell", which they sold to everyone. So with that lack of enthusiasm, and product knowledge, I thought I'd contact the North American distributor of the product, which Is (AIR BP), British Petroleum, and they would cover me up with so many testimonials that I'd have to buy a new file cabinet to hold them. Well, surprise, surprise; It took multiple e-mails and phone calls to get anyone that would talk to me and when I finally did get the "manager, and person responsible for making "Castrol Aviator" a success here in the U.S.", his reply was, "well we don't have much on that product yet, as it is new and we haven't had time to get everything together"; and this is the "North American Distributor", telling me this? He indicated that there was a flight school and an aircraft manufacture that was using the product, however never produced any testimonials from them. I will say though, that he was gracious enough to send me a Castrol Aviator ball cap, which is a superb cap, (maybe ball caps are what they should be selling instead of oil) and a copy of the same info that is in the magazines for my consumption, and that was that, not another word. Then in the spring of 2005 I received a call from the, owner of the Tulsa distributorship, saying he had a note where I had called and ask for info, and could he help me; his desk must be worse than mine if he's just then getting down to my request, after all that time. I recapped all that had happened and he "assured" me (you all know how that go's) that in the next few days, when he returned from some motorcycle races that he's involved in, in Florida, that he was going to take care of my needs, and would be right back with, "All the answers", and would come and give a presentation to all of us at our airport, OKM, where there are (3) major engine re-builders/maintenance facilities. Well here it is May, and not another peep from him either. I have said all of this, to let all of you that may have seen AIR BP's ad's, and wondered if "Castro Aviator" was as good as "they" say it is, know that "AIR BP" apparently isn't very proud of their product, and doesn't care if us in the aviation industry use it, or not. So at this point I'll probably use Shell or Phillips multi-grade, as that is what many of you out there on the list have recommended for my particular needs for this airplane. I'm always open to any body's input, so If you care to comment on which oil you feel is best, please do. Bill Byars !949 T8F
