The engine sat overhauled and pickled for 9 years before installing on my aircraft. I am running mineral oil until 50 hours as per Lycoming. The plane has not flown yet and has about 5 hours of taxi tests completed--ready to take her up and run the engine at 75% for 2 hours, per Lycoming. Should this puff be of any concern--is the engine trying to tell me something? Just trying to cover everything before first flight. Brad do not archive

    --> Engines-List message posted by: Marvin Dupree <97corvette@cox.net> i am not an expert. but i can offer some thoughts. i would look at the carb adjustments. are you are shutting down by setting idle at 800 to 1000 rpm and then going to full lean? if the lean is not "full lean" on the carb then the engine may be stopping but some small amount of fuel is still being introduced to the cylinders. the smoke could be a bit of raw fuel being pumped out the exhaust. white smoke from the exhaust could mean excess fuel. it could also mean some moisture in the mix. blue smoke would be oil. is there any smoke when running steady at say 1500rpm? check mag timing just to be sure of it. i wouldn't think timing would cause the smoke, but stranger things have happened. another thought, i would try shutting down at different rpms to see if the puff still appears. as long as everything else is okay, i would not be concerned until after a few hours in the air. the engine needs high power settings for an hour at a time to seat the rings. you got to do that in the air to keep it cool. lol marv mooney m20e with a fresh ovh engine with 30 hours on it. so far so good.
