Subject: Re: Rod Bolt Torque? Continental A-65
--> Engines-List message posted by: "Jerry Isler" <jlisler@alltel.net> My original Continental engine manual dated 12-01-49 says the following: 1) Install the crankshaft in holding fixture. (Vertical, with prop flange down according to picture in manual) 2) Lay out the four sets of connecting rods, caps and bolts in numerical order, according to the cylinder numbers stamped on their bolt bosses. 3) Insert two bolts in each rod bearing cap with the heads flat against the cap shoulders 4) Obtain a set of new bearing inserts of the correct size for the crankshaft. Place an insert in each rod and cap. The inserts must seat fully, and their ends must project very slightly and equally above the parting surface. 5) Coat the crankpins and bearings with engine oil. Install each rod and cap on the proper crankpin, according to cylinder numbers, and be sure that the numbers on rod and cap bolt bosses will be on top when crankshaft and rod assembly is installed. Run on the slotted nuts as each rod is installed, in turn, and tighten to specified torque. Install cotter pins. Bend one leg down beside the nut and the other toward the bolt end. Cut off the upper leg so that it will not project beyond the end of the bolt. NOTE - When connecting rods and caps are installed correctly, the bearing cap oil squirt holes will point to the opposite cylinders. This is all that is said about assembling the crank and rods. The torque limit for the rod bolts as specified in the torque limit table is 400-420 inch pounds for a 3/8-24 bolt. --> Engines-List message posted by: "John D. Heath" <altoq@cebridge.net> All This is a link to the newest publication (SB96-7C) I know of, right off the TCM web site. <http://www.tcmlink.com/pdf2/SB96-7C.pdf> It says 400-475 IN/LB, using the procedures outlined in the notes. Read it for yourself. John D. Subject: Re: Engines-List: Rod Bolt Torque? Continental A-65 > This is all that is said about assembling the crank and rods. Subject: Rod Bolt Torque? Continental A-65
--> Engines-List message posted by: john koning <fltrbg@yahoo.com> The Continental interchange catalogue says that an A series connecting rod is interchangeable with the C series rods in engines of the same stroke. That would be A-65,75 or 80 with C-75 or C-85.The torque spec.for the C series engine is listed as 400-475 in.lbs.All these rods of both series engines use 3/8-24 bolts and nuts,so the torque would be the same. Continental A-65 --> Engines-List message posted by: "Georgia Peach" --> Help... I'm new to this list and in need of help. I need to torque the new rod bolts on my Continental A-80 (I know I said A-65 in the subject) but the Continental Maintenance and Overhaul Manual doesn't list the torque values. I hope to set the crank and join the case today and I would be very appreciative if someone could provide the info.
