You will destroy your parting surfaces if you try to pry it apart, and it won't come apart. The dowels do hold it together. The case splitter applies pressure on the crank journal to get enough leverage to overcome the press fit of the dowels. --> Engines-List message posted by: Scott Farner <sfarner@gmail.com> I am overhauling my IO-360-A3B6D (with A&P help, of course) and am a little confused over how to split the case. The parts manual clearly shows that there are four dowels that go all of the way through the case - two forward of cylinders 1&2, and two that are used to bolt on cylinders 1&2 - and that there are two studs that go through one side of the case and terminate inside the other side. My question is where in the front of the engine is pressure put to separate the case halves. I have the plates that bolt over the cylinder holes and are used to crank down on the studs in the rear, but there doesn't seem to be a place to do this on the front of the engine as it does not seem possible to use the through-dowels to push on the opposite case half. Thanks, Scott Farner RV-7A Fuse
