Which Ford did you use? PAW does an interesting 427 version of the
351W.

I have been talking to them for 5 years. Promises, promises, Promises,,,
They have a great idea and the potential for a new powerplant is right
on
thier doorstep. They just can't seem to figure out how to open that
door.
After hearing, "next month" for years now my bets are they will deliver
engines to customers in 2012, Maybe.........................

I offer an opinion on Deltahawk. For several years the company
proceeded
methodically and steadily with development of their engine. They kept
close
to their stated timetables for the most part. At one point they spoke
of
contracting the mfg. of parts and doing the assembly themselves. Later,
the
entire manufacturing and assembly was dealt off to an outside outfit,
not
experienced in engine building. The transition has taken more time than
anticipated. Until recent months no showstoppers had been encountered.
Then a glitch appeared which may not be a showstopper but has slowed
progress. The Hartzell propeller/Deltahawk combination presented
torsional
vibrations that needed attention. It is not clear that to date these
have
been resolved. Workarounds such as wood, composites, etc. are being
evaluated and I'm not aware of results having been published. I recently
spoke with a gentleman who knows some things about diesels and he
described
some on the limitations of the mechanical injection system chosen by
Deltahawk. We'll have to await the outcome.
Dh intended to contract fwf development to others and perhaps that work
is
underway. Installation of such an engine in an aircraft not designed
for it
is not for the faint of heart and is outside my skill/timeframe
abilities,
so I cancelled the order I had placed and turned to the Lyc 390 package.
For those who can wait and have the energy to tackle such a project, I
think
optimism is still justified but if one doesn't have the luxury of time,
I'd
suggest looking elsewhere.
The prospect of sealevel power at higher altitudes is very appealing,
but,
and it's a big "but", the flutter resistance of Van's designs have been
called into question. Ken Krueger is dogmatic on the subject. He flat
says, "don't do it." I personally don't know but would look forward to
an
independent analysis. If it is a problem, then the question becomes,
"what
can be done about it, if anything."
I hope I have not mischaracterized Deltahawk. There may be things I'm
not
aware of. It is not my intent to belittle them, on the contrary, they
have
done an outstanding job of identifying and coping with the problems
inherent
in such a development project and I wish them well. I certainly hope
they
do not go the way of Zoche's Aerodiesel.
