The outrigger mod is a Europa Club mod. Having fitted it to my Europa as
an individual mod (UK PFA approved) the PFA suggested that it was made more
readily available. I have twice mentioned it to the factory because it needs
the minimum of extra parts and they could stock it as a factory mod. They
don't seem to be interested which is why it has become a club mod. Anyone
wishing to make use of this mod has only to join the club and the details
are then free. The club is there to support Europa owners so it is hardly a
big expense to sign up when we spend thousands of 's/$'s on the aircraft in
the first place. In the near future, as the stainless tube required for part
of the mod is a little difficult to obtain, I am purchasing stock to make up
kits of parts for those east of the Atlantic and I believe Fergus Kyle is
helping out those of you on the west side. I will be placing an order for
parts at the end of the month so anyone in Europe wishing to make use of
this service should contact me by then to confirm their order.

Nigel,
I ordered the SS before acquiring the Club mod because there was
difficulty here in getting on the memebers only section. When I found a
minimum order pertained, I decided to make a bulk order and so have 4 feet
of same and sent out the message.
I presume you provide only the SS tubing (as I) but if you
produce more, please let me know and will duplicate your method for ease of
understanding. What I don't know is whether the colonists will want to pay
for a 'foreign' membership! They are pretty paranoid right now, what with
border people inspecting lipsticks etc. What was a whimsical faux pas is now
a fullblown xenaphobia....
Best regards to you both,
Ferg

Hi Tony,
My sticks are one piece bent tubes rather than the earlier welded
version. I do not think that makes any difference. Anyway, my sticks are
installed with the longer of the sections down. It works fine for me.
However, do not make the mistake I made which was to install the sticks
symmetrically with the axis of the crank parallel to the centerline.
Later when I sat in the cockpit, I found that I had less travel to the
left than to the right due to the stick hitting my left leg. I then had
to rebolt the stick with an anti-clockwise twist of about 25 - 30
degrees to get equal travel. The passenger stick needs twist in the
other direction of course.

Hi,
I fitted my column with the longer part down and also fitted one of those
contoured wooden things on top with PTT button. Everything seemed OK ...
until ... after fitting the control panel, I couldn't get 'full and free' at
maximum forward/port extension (passenger side). I had to trim off some of
the wood. Bear in mind though, that you get less movement on the stick when
plane is fully rigged.

From what I remember of a previous discussion around fuel guages, there was
talk of a PFA requirement to have 2 seperate methods of verifying tank
contents. As part of modifying the fuel system to be aluminium tube and AN
standard fittings throughout, I have tried to keep 'plastic' tubes of fuel
and jubilee clips out of the cockpit. Indeed many of the sight guages I've
seen at Cranfield appear to be so clouded as to be difficult to read.
I have gone with the Avlec capacitance fuel guage which does require the
installation of an aluminium plate in the tank top. This has conveniently
given me a place to put a 1/2" BSP threaded hole and plug so that I can
visually verify the tank contents and 'dip' it as per Cessna etc. as part of
pre flight. Pics available if anyone wants.

Does anyone have plans for either a monowheel trailer or a triwheel trailer that
they are willing to share? It seems silly to ship a trailer part way around

Hi Paul,
can i have a pic please? Did you say you can 'dip' your fuel?
Doesn't that leave a fuel smell in the cockpit?

Subject: | The Dreaded Petrol(Gas) smell. |
--> Europa-List message posted by: "Michael Parkin" <Mikenjulie.Parkin@btopenworld.com>
Has anyone had any problems with the intermittent smell of petrol in the cockpit.
I think that this may be a MONOWHEEL and ROTAX 914 specific problem.
My monowheel occassionally has a strong odour of fuel in the cockpit which occurs
as far as I can figure on throttling back - at top of climb etc. I have moved
the fuel and airbox drains further outboard which seemed to have some effect
in reducing the problem.
I have double checked all hoses for security and all seem fine. My wife, who can
smell an illegal cigarette at 500 yds, can detect no specific area in the cockpit
that smells of fuel.
Is it possible that the carburettors are ejecting some fuel through the overflows
which then gets swept into the wheel well and hence the cockpit. If so does
any one have a cure!!!
On another subject. The boost pressure details for the Rotax 914 are fairly specific
for sea-level take-off performance, but information on boost limits at
altitude are virtually non-existant. In a recent climb to FL100 my boost gauge
reached 1.3 bar (sea level limit 1.37 bar) at which point I throttled back.
What sort of boost pressure do you 'hi-fliers' see in normal operations?

I am trying to get into the club website but I'm not there yet.
Do you have a description of what this mod is? Do you have any pix of
the change. I've got 28 hours on my mono-wheel and I would like to make
the outrigger as trouble free as I can.

Tony,
Sit in you seat and you may find that the shorted length needs to
be on top. The offset needs to clear the seat and your lap. Then into
your stomach!! Remember that the stick pivots way down and you are in
the arc when moving the stick rearward. If the pivot was closer / under
you , you could get by with a shorter stick.

Hi,
I am currently perplexed with the setting up of the wing bellcrank neutral
position to match the spar one to ascertain the length of the spanwise
pushrod and then ascertain the length of the aileron chordwise link rod.
The wing embedded bellcrank has a long arm for the long tube, and a short
one for the short tube. I can't easily find the neutral position of this
bellcrank. I can easily find the stop though, as the short arm which is
above and inboard of the pivot point or attachment of the bearing pushes
the outboard edge of the long arm against the bolt stop. Is there an easy
way to find neutral, bearing in mind I don't have a lot of room to get
access, only that available through the normal access hole?

I just had a ccustom trailer built for me in Spokane, Washington (NW US) for $2800.
It is 24 feet long by 102 inches total width (widest legal in the US and
Canada). My trigear MG fits onto the ramp without having to take off the whell
pants. The trailer tilts to allow the Europa to be handwinched up a gentle
incline then the tilt is release to give a flatbed floor. It is uncovered, dual
axel and has an emergency brake system which activates if the trailer becomes
detached and the safety chord is yanked. It pulls nicely behind my Jeep at
65 mph.

James,
Yes, it replaces the simple 1/4" pivot bolt with two concentric
tubes with end washers which prevent the harder bolt from rotating and
ballooning the alu holes.
It is not a factory mod, but a development of a suggested fix
from the Club Flyer magazine #16. Nigel Charles prewsented a variation on
same to the Brit PFA who sanctioned it as an accepted mod (they sanctify
just about everything over there. As a Canuck, I try to accede to my
National standards AND FAA AND PFA. I cannot die!

Not really, Paul,
Britannia Airways actually flew Bristol Britannias and had some
fairly irregular schedules. One such brought a female First Officer on the
air at 0530 asking to "cross Green One (the airway from Shannon to London)
at 'level 45' (4500' on 29.92=1013.2mb)". London Airways replied, "Britannia
XXX cross Green One between Reading and Woodley at level 45 on QNH 1013mb."
She then transmitted as per the AA123 above.
You can imagine the PanAm offering which instantly occurred. I
know - I was nearby there in a TCA Connie.............

Sorry Ferg but you only think you have yourself covered. Don't you know
that anything which has been proven to work for years in all other countries
is subject to different laws of physics over here in Oz. Mate, I'd be very
cautious about flying your machine if you haven't first satisfied our CASA's
rules.

Are the trailer being discussed for mono- or tri-gear?
If for mono, I would certainly participate in the "bulk
order" (and associated price discounts that it brings).
If we do have several interested parties, we could
discuss features of the trailers and find a builder.
If not, I may design my own and engineer in
multi-purpose elements. Ralph Petersen, one of the
West Coast sales reps is building his own, I will check
with him about details but I think he is going with an
enclosed set-up.
