      Gidday,
Just in case someone was going to point out the "bleeding obvious", I have
found the missing page from my manual regarding the setting up of the aileron
on the wing to give the dimension for the aileron link rod to spar pushrod.
      Thanks anyway.

      Hi,
I am currently perplexed with the setting up of the wing bellcrank neutral
position to match the spar one to ascertain the length of the spanwise
pushrod and then ascertain the length of the aileron chordwise link rod.
The wing embedded bellcrank has a long arm for the long tube, and a short
one for the short tube. I can't easily find the neutral position of this
bellcrank. I can easily find the stop though, as the short arm which is
above and inboard of the pivot point or attachment of the bearing pushes
the outboard edge of the long arm against the bolt stop. Is there an easy
way to find neutral, bearing in mind I don't have a lot of room to get
access, only that available through the normal access hole?

Dean, I am talking Mono-wheel and am thinking of copying the Europa design.
Those who have used one for a while may have some suggestions for design
improvements. I would be happy with the simple, open trailer. I would like
to borrow one for a week or so and get a design on paper. I have a friend
      who is a welder/fabricator.
I am surprised that Europa FL doesn't make them. Seems like it would be
more cost effective than building them in GB and shipping. There should be a
few to be sold over here.

Are the trailer being discussed for mono- or tri-gear?

If for mono, I would certainly participate in the "bulk
order" (and associated price discounts that it brings).

If we do have several interested parties, we could
discuss features of the trailers and find a builder.

If not, I may design my own and engineer in
multi-purpose elements. Ralph Petersen, one of the
West Coast sales reps is building his own, I will check
with him about details but I think he is going with an
      enclosed set-up.

Does anyone have plans for either a monowheel trailer
      or a triwheel trailer
that they are willing to share? It seems silly to ship
      a trailer part way

"Has anyone had any problems with the intermittent smell of petrol in the
cockpit. I think that this may be a MONOWHEEL and ROTAX 914 specific problem."

I do get an intermittent smell of exuast when lowering flaps and gear but never
      fuel.

On another note, I have noticed that the airbox drain/vent line is accumilating
oil on my 914. Not a lot mind you but enough that it got me thinking. In 30
hours of flying I have probably less than 1/4 oz. My question is has anyone
else seen this? Is it normal? Two things I can think of is that the oil is seeping
past the oil seal in the turbo and making its way into the air intake.
Or perhaps it is the oil used to initially charge the air filter.

      Kevin,
I've gotten several quotes on a "one off" basis for an open trailer that
could be used for either the trigear or monowheel.
I have several other builders who are also interested so please contact

For UK Europa builders and owners.........
Seeing as I'm commited to building a taildragger, and it's not a practical
proposition to convert a monowheel trailer, it's up for sale. Very few
miles, but the steel parts need refinishing... contact me off list if you're

I know that this has been discussed before but I can't seem to find the
      answer in the archive.

I am wondering where to mount the aerial for my Skymap GPS.

I was told that it was OK to mount it underneath the top of the instrument
binnacle but the manual says that it's view of the sky should be as free of
obstructions as possible. I guess it could go on top of the pod so that the
signal only has the screen to negotiate.

      Suggestions please?

      Hi Richard,

we originally had our Skymap antenna inside the panel, at the very top, above
the retraction lever cutout. Early in flight testing I had trouble with the GPS
losing lock. We tried moving the antenna around and found it did not like being
above the radios and instruments in the panel. Even when it was placed on top
of the instrument panel it had problems. We eventually moved it up in the
overhead area, where it has worked fine since. It does not mind being
underneath fiberglass of plexiglass. It was the radios and/or instruments below
      it that caused the problem.

      regards,
      Terry Seaver

This has often been on the old forum. Mine is on the roof just in front of

Hi Kevin, Dean, Bob, Ferg and Rob

Thanks for your replies. I need a mono trailer and I have never seen one
nor know of one to copy. A number of them have been custom built so there
must be plans and specs somewhere. Yes, I think that if a number could be
ordered, a significant savings in $$ can probably be made.

Ferg, thanks for your offer. I am still hoping to get specific plans. If
not, I will contact you. Dean, do you know if Ralph has plans or can you
copy his? I suspect that there are many others in need. Aren't there 15+
Europe's being built in California alone? (I am in Atascadero)

Bob and Rob: I need a mono trailer but Dale Hetrick needs a tri and I am
sure that he will be most interested.

      Richard,

The 'binnacle' is plastic and so transparent to GPS frequencies, so no
problem there. However, you may want to try it first before a permanent fit,
as these aerials can easily pick up noise from other avionics. It is
generally a good idea to keep GPS aerials at least 6 inches away from other
      transmitting stuff.

      Ian.

      Hi Ferg

I ordered 5 feet first time around and although that was enough for 15
aircraft it was soon used up.

To make things easier for customers I have decided to buy the following to
      make up the kit:

      4" steel tube
2 AN4 sized stiff nuts (I forget the MS number)
      4 AN4 sized thin washers
      2 grease nipples.

All but the grease nipples are obtained from Wicks (or A/C Spruce). My local
car accessory shop supply the grease nipples. Just choose a size with a
common thread so a tap can easily be obtained.

Reference membership. I feel it is pretty poor if builders of $50,000
aircraft feel they cannot afford the membership of the club. The fact that
quite a lot of the articles are European orientated says more about the lack
of non European input. Anyway the club supports the owners in many ways
apart from the magazine and these mods are a typical example. The committee
feels that it is reasonable to limit these mods to members only so we would
appreciate it if you did the same.

      Regards

      Nigel

PS. Are you coming over to the UK this summer? It would be nice to meet up
      again.

I don't think Ralph is working form plans, but is
making the plans as he goes. I will talk to him and
      find out for sure.

Kingsley has sent a picture of his enclosed trailer
which is what I would really like to do but I only have
garage space available on my small in-town
property...the CC&Rs prevent me from keeping a trailer
on the street in front of the house.

Terry Seaver has suggested that I might be able to
borrow an open, mono-wheel trailer from him and Dave.
That gives the opportunity of taking a few hours for
measurements and pictures to share. I could just as
easily do it at their hanger which is only a 2 hour
drive away since I would have to go there to retrieve
it...providing Terry and Dave have the time.

If Rob Neils is willing to share the plans for his
flat-bed tri-gear trailer, and Kingsley for the
      enclosed version...that covers everyone.

I would like to make sure there is a way of taking all
of the protrusions off the top and mounting a sheet of
plywood to use the trailer for other light hauling
duties. Possibly even adding mounting bosses for a
second axle since the main axle is set quite far back
to compensate for the weight of the engine at the far
      back end of the trailer.

Hi Kevin, Dean, Bob, Ferg and Rob

Thanks for your replies. I need a mono trailer and I
      have never seen one
nor know of one to copy. A number of them have been
      custom built so there
must be plans and specs somewhere. Yes, I think that
      if a number could be
ordered, a significant savings in $$ can probably be
      made.

Ferg, thanks for your offer. I am still hoping to get
      specific plans. If
not, I will contact you. Dean, do you know if Ralph
      has plans or can you
copy his? I suspect that there are many others in
      need. Aren't there 15+
Europe's being built in California alone? (I am in
      Atascadero)

Bob and Rob: I need a mono trailer but Dale Hetrick
needs a tri and I am
sure that he will be most interested.

A few weeks ago there was a thread on the email group on the subject of
mono-wheel jacking blocks, etc. I mentioned something about ours, and
got a return email asking if I had photos. I didn't at the time, but
have since created a web-site which includes some mods and building tips
      David DeFord and I have come up with. The web site is currently at;

      http://terryseaver.home.attbi.com/europa_page.html

My provider (attbi) has merged with another, so the site name is going
to be changing in the near future. I'll post the new name in an email
      once the dust settles.

The mods section also includes a description and pictures of our cooling
baffle between the footwells that I described several months ago, and
had a request for pictures as well.

      regards,

If you alter the spar socket such that it can rotate and pivot it makes
single handed rigging a doddle with the aid of a trolley to support the
outboard end of the wing. I modified an old golf trolley for the job and I
rig single handed for every trip. It takes less than half an hour from
arriving at the airfield to being ready for flight - no sweat. Similar time
      to de-rig.
A boat trailer winch helps with getting the aircraft back on the trailer
      single-handed.
The down load on the trailer hitch is way beyond that recommended for
trailing and I think the axle should be further forward.
In order to hitch the loaded trailer on to my car I have mounted a pulley on
the side of the frame by the hitch. I can get a two to one purchase to lift
the front end of the trailer, using a rope looped under the pulley with a
toggle on one end and the other end attached to a pole about one metre long.
The wheel ramp doesn't always release easily, and rather than reduce the
thickness of the tufnoll on the inside of the ramp I have fitted a bracket
on the side of the ramp which I can thump with a soft mallet to make the
      ramp drop.
I secure the fuselage to the trailer with straps which locate with pins in
the rear wing mount points. The wings are secured with straps through the
outrigger mechanism and the outriggers are tied together over the top of the
      fuselage.
The supplied rubber wing support slings mark the paintwork and crack with
age. I have replaced these with polypropylene straps of a similar width,
covered leatherette cuffs (soft side out). These are better than the rubber
straps but I would welcome suggestions for a better solution.
          Roger. G-BXTD.

I had to do some research on the word "doodle" as used in

The word `doddle' is listed in the Longman Dictionary of

you might want to contact the factory, maybe you could
piggy-back on an already scheduled container. It was
some years ago when I used containers from Houston TX
to UK so I am not sure what prices would be now.

      Richard,

<My son, who has done quite a bit of 3d modelling, is working on the graphics
<for my tri gear and wondered if anyone has created a computer 3d model of a
<Europa which he could download? ( for a flight sim programme perhaps?).

I have recently launched a company specializing in scale RC models of
Experimental Aircraft. By a strange coincidence the name of the company is
      "Experimental Aircraft Models"!

With the mission of 'Enhancing the homebuilt experience' we are also offering an
RC simulator that includes sims of the ARF models we are offering.

Of course, the Europa is one of them. We are currently programming the Europa
and it should be done in a few weeks. We are using an excellent set of drawings
for both the 1/5th scale model and the sim that was kindly provided by Andy at
the factory. We're hoping to have the sim and the prototype model at our booth
at Sun N' Fun. We've completed the RV-6 and I can send you an image of that if
you'd like to see what the graphic would look like. (The models are all in white
so builders can apply their own aircraft color schemes) I can rotate the graphic
and get any angle you'd need (e.g. bottom).

I don't want to tie up bandwidth with might seem like a commercial comment, so
if you'd like to know more, feel free to contact me directly. You can reach me
at experimentalaircraftmodels@earthlink.net also. If there is general interest
expressed by other members of the forum about the model then I'd be happy
provide a little more information about what I'm doing.

      Gidday,
Anyone know where I can find Avalec on the net? I have tried the normal
avenues like search engines to no avail. I am making a final comparison
between the Lyndhurst magnetic float system and the Avalec, if I can
reinvigorate my interest. It is a very last minute request as I am
basically in the process of ordering the Lyndhurst. Any last minute pieces
of advice on this topic would be much appreciated.

Believe it or not, I did not measure it. I made them about 1/4 inch shorter
than the uncompressed thickness of the O200 mounts. The paper I used to mark
the inserts is long gone. I basically estimated the amount the old insert was
shorter than the old mounts. I do have a picture I can email to you.

      Erich,

I have a 914 with almost 500 hr. on it. Since day one, the airbox vent has been
weeping oil. I think it must be the nature of the beast.

While on the subject of the airbox, the temperature probe in the airbox needs to
be pulled out and cleaned with alcohol, or acetone about every 150 to 200 hours.
The oil on it due to heat in the airbox will blacken. Once this happens being
dark it absorbs heat, an as a result it sends a higher temperature back
to the computer. The computer is set to retard timing when the airbox temperature
reaches 165 degrees F. Here in Florida, in the summer, at takeoff
with full boost it is not long before 165 Degrees is reached.

This is one of the reasons that we have installed an intercooler.

oil on my 914. Not a lot mind you but enough that it got me thinking. In
30 hours of flying I have probably less than 1/4 oz. My question is has anyone
else seen this? Is it normal? Two things I can think of is that the oil is
seeping past the oil seal in the turbo and making its way into the air intake.
Or perhaps it is the oil used to initially charge the air filter.

A question arises in my mind on this. The temp probe is sticking inside the
airbox. If it turns black from soot or something, that would only effect
heating if it were exposed to light. It's dark inside that airbox, so
wouldn't the problem be something else, like insulating the probe perhaps?

      Just wondering,
