Hi Carl,
I have in front of me some bumph from Warp Drive Inc. in which they state
that the 1/4" bolts have a setting of 100 to 120 inch pounds (9-10 foot
pounds) and the 5/16th bolts 175 inch pounds (14.5 ft. lbs).
This sheet deals with the hub assembly and It goes on to say that the bolts
should be re-torqued after 1hr operation and thereafter every 5 - 10 hours
as part of regular maintenance. It also,usefully, states that the airfoils
should face in the same direction. If you have a fax I can send this sheet
through to you.

Since we are on the subject of prop bolt settings, does anyone know what the
torque settings for the standard warp drive prop (Rotax 912 engine).
Could also do with the torque settings for the prop hub bolts (these are
something like M6 but probably imperial)
I am currently using 20nm for the main prop attachment bolts but I suspect
this is way too high. None of my manuals gives a figure for the prop bolts
but 20 nm seems to be the setting for most of the other M8 bolts used by
Rotax.

Paul,
Graham is here from the 4th till the 11th. Big plans to put the cockpit module
in, but I'll take as much as I can, so to speak. I am not that hopeful, but
some consolidated building would be good. If I can get all the flight controls
in that would be good, and maybe the fuel tank. Not really much more to the
cockpit module I know, but I simply can't imagine getting all that work done.
Kingsley Hirst from Taroom is coming down on Sunday for the best part of a week
and is going to help me build a fuselage cradle first up. This should be a
great help, as he is also bringing down his profiles. I havent decided which
engine but it appears it will be the 914 by default. There is a mob in New
Zealand who would love me to put there Subaru conversion in, and combine with
an Airmaster prop. I could possibly get a tax deduction out of the aeroplane if
I did that too which might make it attractive. Lots of water to go under the
bridge yet, before I need to make those sorts of decisions, but I truly don't
want to give up and I have high hopes of getting the lid on this year, if all
goes well.

I have done one turn spins in N914EA and found nothing remarkable.
I have it on very good authority however that multiturn spins become easy
to
flatten and then the trouble starts!

The Tri-gear was indeed spun, although we didn't record this with video. The behaviour
in spin recovery is much the same as with the mono-wheel. The Motor
glider also was spin tested.

I don't believe any one (except Van's I'm told) can so what we can.
Hav'nt seen a video where he shows what it can do safely. Ours is tried
and proven. A caviot to this, the tri-gear was not spun, only the
mono-wheel. So, be careful. However, loops and rolls seem nice.

A question to the 914 fliers:
What oil temps do you see in a typical sustained climb at what speed? What
cylinder temps do you also see?
I am up to flight #9 today and am flying in cold weather, seeing up to 220
degrees when reading 15,000 feet, at 90 knots. I think I will have a problem
in the warm weather. The long wing airplane will be getting some serious cowl
modifications to keep the engine warm when shut down -- and reducing drag. It
looks like I will need to incorporate improved cooling in that design, unless
these numbers are not out of line.

The torque figures are with on the data sheet supplied with the propeller. I'll
send you a copy if you cannot find one.
The blade bolts should be torqued to 100 - 120 inch pounds ( 9 - 10 foot pounds

module (is that a binnacle??). It works fine. It is less than six inches
from my
other avionics, but so far no trouble. GPS frequencies are quite distant
from other
avionics frequencies. I presume none of them are on a harmonic of 1090 MHz
;-)

Hi Ira,
Being that RF is my specialty, I would suspect that the folks having trouble
with GPS reception with the antenna mounted in the panel are likely caused by
the proximity to metal parts to the antenna or a leaky coax connector.
Grounded metal parts, i.e., radio chasis, wiring, etc, would "desense" the
receive characteristics of the antenna if they are close enough by changing
the characteristics of the SWR of the receive antenna. GPS signals are weak
and it doesn't take much to make the signal unusable. A leaky coax connector
close by on your Com or Transponder wouldn't help matters either.

a builder of a 'Kitfox' like homebuilt (a forget the name of the kit), He commented
that the trailers, even with the plane in them, are fairly light, making
them very susceptible to cross winds when being towed. Sail plane trailers are
long with a pretty low profile, so they are not as easily blown around as a
wider/taller enclosed trailer would be.

There is a VHF frequency that is exactly a 10th harmonic of the civil GPS
one, and it is 122.760MHz. This is why some manufacturers, such as Garmin,
offer a plug-in notch filter. Although you may think that the power at the
10th harmonic is negligible, the GPS recieves signals from the satellites
that are below the noise floor (some clever signal processing and knowledge
of what the signal should look like allows it to be extracted from the
noise). If you are going to upset the GPS with a VHF airband transmitter,
this is the frequency that will do it.

push rod so that if it fails it will fail in the open position. It means
that a section of the door has to be cut out and reglassed in - it can be

That is one reason mine is heavy, the other is that heavy trailers don't
bounce making tie downs damage the cargo! Nothing in my trailer is / or

As per factory recommendation, I have cut out a 3in. diameter hole in rear
triangle of each door to fit & access the locks. I have made 4in. discs to
cover the holes, held in place with normal AN52510R8 bolts into anchor nuts
in doors around aperture. As Dave says, they can be fitted after latch is
installed or even retrofitted to finished doors.

In the process of fitting the door latch mechanism. I'm thinking of
lockable
doors as per the factory accessory catalogue. Anyone who has fitted them,
I
was intending to bond the back plate into the door sill tomorrow, I don't
want to do this if fitting the locks will interfere.
Anyone got any advice

Hi! Richard.
Mine are BMW 312 seat foam covered by an upholsterer. The backs needed
cutting down by about 9" but I was able to use the head rests by cutting out
sections of the metal frames from the original seat backs and fixing them in
the Europa "head rest" area. Can't remember where I got the stainless
Reg.Plate No. from probably where I got the painting done.!

Some words of caution here:
- Check ANY cuts, openings or mods to the cockpit module with the factory
first. The c.m. carries sustantial loads, and also some in the longitudinal
direction between the firewall/engine mount and the wing support part (or
rather: where the module and the rest of the aircraft hang on the wings!)
- I doubt that you physically can fit the selector under (or on the front
of) the thigh support (at least not on XS) because of lack of space for the
hoses inside the thigh support. I don't know the min. bending radius for
your hose, but for the latest supplied by the factory I don't think less
than 1 3/4" is recommended (based on info on similar hose available at local
dealer here).
- Even if you could fit the valve and hoses, a good rule is that the
selector should be placed where it can easily be seen and operated both by
the pilot in the left seat and by the (safety) pilot in the right seat.

For what it is worth in your case:
David Schofield in England is building a tailor-made covered trailer for my
Europa XS Trigear, based on his long-proven glider trailer designs. Will
double as my hangar. Maybe he is willing to sell his drawings to a US
maker, if it is too expensive to ship one across. I will pick mine up later
in the spring, so I don't have photos yet, but he has some digital photos
taken during construction that he might want to e-mail to you. You can

http://www.gd-ind.com/schofieldaviation/. Mine is basically as the DS-19
shown on the web site, but shorter (thank heavens!) and without the sloped
roof forward.

Joseph - I can call your bluff on that! The Europa Club does accept
subs by credit card (MC or Visa - not debit or charge cards) and has
done for quite a few years. We went through a lot of red tape here to
set up the card acceptance facility specifically because so many
overseas people wanted to join the Club. For those unused to
transactions in different currencies, it's very simple - we get the
amount we ask in pounds sterling; you get billed for the equivalent
amount in dollars just as usual (normally with a note about the
currency conversion).
And in respect of the PFA approved mods - the people who produced the
first one had to do a lot of work to convince PFA Engineering that
the mod _and_ the documentation were up to scratch. I feel that Club
members who have donated that amount of elbow-grease to the Club are
entitled to insist that the fruits of their labours are distributed
only to Club members - not to anyone who just wants to have it all
for nothing.
Anyone who wishes to know more about the Club, please ask me for the
latest info by e-mail (no obligation). The document posted here a
while back has now been superseded in several respects.

Hi Dave,
I have done something similar, but you will find that the door skin
needs to be re-enforced from the inside. Otherwise it is too
flexible when someone tries to open the door with some force.
No lock is really secure, it merely helps to stop people from
playing with the controls etc.. The lock could be disabled within seconds by
drilling it out with a hole saw. I saved myself work
by installing only one lock on the P1 side. The other door is locked
from the inside (only on the ground) with a pip pin that goes through
the door handle guard and the handle. Saves me from going around
the airplane every time I want to lock/unlock.

Can't help you on the seats as I am still flying with wedges of foam at
the moment. Regarding the SS reg plate I purchased an 1/8" punch set and
punched out the data. Worked great and looks really good.
