Krzyzewski" <tonyk@kaon.co.nz> A lot of our unmanned strips now have automatic weather stations (AWIB's) which transmit the current weather conditions when you click transmit on their frequency four times. The system can't be too expensive otherwise the private strip owners wouldn't put them in. I'll have a ferret around and find out who makes them.< Thanks Tony. The only trouble is that in the UK we are having difficulty even trying to get an equivalent to a Unicom frequency so the chances of me being allowed a frequency for the above purpose is extremely remote. I am hoping that there is something which could use the short range no licence walkie talkie transceivers. Perhaps the products you are referring to can be adapted to use these products? Regards Nigel

--> Europa-List message posted by: "paul stewart" <paul-d.stewart@virgin.net> Just been fittin the doors and their hinges this evening. Cant quite see why the side attached to the door is attached with countersunk screws and the side attached to the fuselage with AN 525-10R10 dome headed screws. It seems the door becomes hinge bound as it closes as the head of the AN525 is too proud of the hinge. Anyone had similar experience or (as I'm thinking of doing) replacing them with countersunk versions. Regards Paul Stewart #432

I have not really found the need for a parking brake. I hold onto the brake (right hand) while I do my run up (using my left hand for throttle) But it's a nice to have as it means you don't have to hold the control column in your teeth. :-) Tony

--> Europa-List message posted by: Tony Renshaw <tonyrenshaw@ozemail.com.au> Gidday, I am wondering after reading Paul McAllisters website about the recommendations for preping the fuel tank before I attack it with my soldering iron to install the Europa fuel probe (magnetic). The question is that I was only going to drain it of fuel and wash it out with water, but I now fear that I need to do more than that. Does the plastic absorb some of the fuel that would make things dangerous for me if I keep to my original plan? Reg Tony Renshaw

If it's possible I would work with it filled with water to just below where you are working. Fuel gasses even come out of metal tanks and at 17% with air it explodes. stuff too.
    From: "Peter Zutrauen" <peterz@zutrasoft.com>
--> Europa-List message posted by: "Peter Zutrauen" <peterz@zutrasoft.com> A very bright engineer, Martin Poettcker at our local EAA chapter, who is building a Zenair with a Subaru engine has researched and designed a torsional damper for his personal application. His opinion was that engine-mount softness was not a contributing factor to gear-loading and wear at idle. Interesting though is his analysis that at idle-speed the forces on the gearbox can be over 10x the forces seen at full power. Most folks in the aviation community attempt to mitigate the problem by reducing tolerances (removing gear-lash or tightening belts), but from this fellow's research and analysis it his opinion that all these actions do is raise the Q of the system resulting in even higher gear forces at idle speeds. I wonder if on the Rotax design the slipper-clutch comes into play at idle speeds, and if so how much power it dissipates in an effort to save the gear-train. One reason to keep that idle speed up as previously discussed on this forum. Martin's presentation was most enlightening, and his one-off design, although based on a variant of an existing textbook design is ingenious in its effectiveness and simplicity. I especially like the rubber expansion chamber to accommodate the oil expansion due to the oil damping-induced power dissipation. I'll be following his success, failures and tuning with much interest. His slides can be seen at: http://eaa245.dhs.org/Presentations/EA81Torsion/Torsion/sld001.htm For the folks who enjoy prop dynamics and construction techniques there was also another EAA member who put on an equally intriguing presentation. It can be seen at: http://eaa245.dhs.org/Presentations/CozyProp/sld001.htm Cheers, Pete A239
