Subject: | Aileron Pushrod Tube Dimensions |
--> Europa-List message posted by: Tony Renshaw <tonyrenshaw@ozemail.com.au>
Gidday,
Well it was a day of 3 steps forward and 2 back. I bonded in the port
aileron torque tube in the cockpit module, successfully, and then with my
daughters assistance I measured and cut the port wing's aileron pushrod.
Failure!!!! I cut the bloody thing at the base of the rod end insert, not
its head. Oh, I kicked myself around the workshop with my daugter somewhat
surprised to see me castigate myself as much as I do her from time to time.
Well now the problem is that I have to source another 12' length of this
stuff, but I am unsure of the spec. My bill of materials describes a tube
that I think might be it, but I'm not sure. TU25RM and it also says
5052-TO- .25" X .035. Well the tube is 1" OD with a wall thickness of .035,
so I figure it must be 5052 tubing, but the .25" has got the better of me?
Any clues as to this, or my ultimate question of "what type of aluminium
tubing is the aileron pushrods"????
P.S. I'd really appreciate a score of people telling me how easy it is to
do what I did, as the bill alone will be a sting, and I have a bruised
behind already from my own kicking.

Mike,
I found this last week when I fitted my ailerons, and checked with the
factory. According to Neville this is normal with the XS wing (the wing tip
is effectively fat and long) including the factory demonstrators, and when
everything is together you simply lop off the TE of the wing tip and have a
step off the aileron on the top side.
In case you haven't found this yet - when you fit the flaps for real you'll
need a couple of mixing sticks between the rib and the template to make up
for the top skin not being fitted - the template dimensions assume it is
fitted.
A tip from the factory for making your plane look a little nicer (and fly a
fraction of a knot faster?): when you fit the wing tip diamond halves, fit
them flat side inboard so you get a nice flat face 3mm from your aileron
tip.
Finally, the tip closeout on the aileron isn't a flox corner and flat skin
because you may need to trip the length a fraction. I've had to cut my
ailerons down rather more than a fraction because they were too long (a
problem the factory has now fixed) and will have to redo the tip closeout -
only this time I can do a flox corner and flat face - which is much easier
to lay up and looks much nicer. Anyone still on their ailerons may choose to
leave the foam in the tip closeout, trim to precise length when fitting to
the wing, and do a flat face instead of the recessed closeout.

Jeremy

Hello all,
I have presently finished a temporary attachment of both aileron hinges on
my
starboard wing. I have also clamped my flap in place with the template on
the
wing root. While the flap fits and lines up well with the template and
aileron, the aileron seems too thin and short at the wing tip. Measured at
the corner of the closeout and wingtip, the aileron is 9 mm lower with the
bottom of the aileron is flush. And the trailing edge of the aileron is also
12 mm shorter along the chord than the wingtip.
Is this normal? Do I have to fill in this area? If so, that's a lot of
filler! Or am I missing something?
I am also aware of another builder at this same point that has the same
problem. Is it a problem? I would appreciate some advice from those that
have
gone before me.

Hi Tim
You heard that G-OWWW flew. It has now finished the test flying, but we have
a paperwork snag. The finger brakes are considered to be a mod that needs
PFA approval ! So I have applied and my drawings were rejected. So another
set are being prepared.
Soon I will have some good news and I hope you will come over and see/fly in
it. It will be a month or two, but that is right because you will need to
come out to Theydon Bois on the Central underground line and that has been
closed for a while. Re-opening is "promised" for April !

From my fiddling with this stuff using a handheld comm, there seems no
rules for these problems. It depends upon the nature of the circuit
affected, length of wiring involved vs. frequency, and even its
orientation (polarization).
I think not grounding the foil is least likely a fix and would start by
grounding at the engine end before other permutations. A shielded
twisted pair may also work better. It also may not be the signal wire
at all. So other approaches are a small capacitor (say .1uf) across
ground and and 14V at the instrument. Try running the ground wire to a
different place; try making 14V and ground a twisted pair.
Regards,
Fred F.

If you don't have PFA-style approvals to deal with, I'd consider
splicing the tubes together with a length of 1-1/8" x .058 tubing and
rivets and cutting again to length. This is an approved method here
(FAA's Aircraft Inspection and Repair, Chapter 2) for aluminum tubing,
including structural members, not just control pushrods here under much
less stress. You can add structural epoxy adhesive to the splice if you
like, as that alone w/o the rivets is the actual construction method in
the Grumman line of singles for the looong aileron torque tubes!
Regards,
Fred F.

Greetings All,
I have just returned from a week at the Civial AeroMedical Institute of
the FAA
in Oklahoma City. I had the opportunity to attend a lecture by the team
leader
of the Biodynamics division (the folks who test seat and restraint designs
for
certification, among other things). We chatted for some time after the
lecture about experimental a/c safety systems. He is familiar with our
favorite A/C and his opinion is,
as already published in Advisory Circular 21-34 (1993), that the standard
upper
attach point is suboptimal. I described the system I installed in N224XS,
which was
shown to me by Bob Berube, and he thought this system (upper belt held by
cable to hardpoint on fuse seam behind baggage bulkhead) was much better.
He is no fan of interial reels either.
Also, he thought 3 inches of tempurfoam is not adequate for safely passing
the 19g
vertical acceleration test. He thought it would provide insufficient
damping and
secondary impacts. I had the idea that low compression strength honeycomb
material, if laminated up to a couple of inches in the seat pan might be
useful.
Anyone want to collaborate on such a design?

Two weeks ago I looked through both the Rotax engine installation check list
for pre- first start up and the Europa equivalent. Now I need them I can't
find either! I have spent two hours this afternoon tearing my workshop and
office apart looking for them. I can only think I have thrown them away by
accident whilst tidying up.
I can't find anything on the Rotax CD and wondered if anyone had anything

Failing that I shall just have to put my engine start back a couple of days
until I can get replacements from the factory.

Why should you be exclusively free of losing things?
Are you not aware that statistics prove that, at any one moment,

Subject: | PLEASE READ - Pending ISP Upgrade For Matronics... |
--> Europa-List message posted by: Matt Dralle <dralle@matronics.com>
Dear Matronics Listers,
Sometime during the next 72 hours, the ISP (Internet Service Provider) for
Matronics will be upgrading the level of service to 1.1Mb from the current
768k. When they reprovision the line, there will be an outage requiring
that the local router here be restarted. It is also unclear whether or not
the physical line will support the new rate, so some testing will be
required to verify the new service at the time of installation.
Unfortunately, I don't really have an idea of exactly when they will be
reprovisioning the line, so I wanted to give everyone a heads up on what's
going on. All Matronics List services such as email list redistribution,
subscriptions, and web search and browse will be unavailable during the
upgrade.
In other upgrade news, last Thursday, 3/13/03 I upgraded the firewall
appliance between the Internet and the Matronics systems. This new
firewall represents a substantial increase in performance and hopefully
reliability over the previous system. It will compliment nicely the new
level of ISP connectivity.
Finally, these are just two examples of the upgrades brought to you
compliments of the 2002 List Fund Raiser. A special thanks to all that
made a Contribution in 2002 and so far this year! Everyone that uses these
Lists appreciates your generosity!
I will post a short message again if I manage to get some clear direction
on the time-frame for upgrade, or perhaps when its been completed.
Thanks again!!

Hi! Tony.
Theoretically Dave is very right to have two since if the main side (PORT)
of the tank has blocked an Andair then the reserve (Starboard) side will be
blocked soon after, since any water/crap will drop to the bottom of the
reserve side tank immediately upon filling. It should be recognised that
regular fuel drain checks of considerable amounts, as well it might be an
idea to have about 10 minutes flight regularly on the reserve side tank. In
fact there's almost a case for using the PORT side for reserve if you could
ensure it would always be replenished. You could then be quite sure that
when "the donkey stops" due to a blocked filter then there's a good chance
the port side will allow you maximum emergency time. However don't shoot the
messenger to coin Ferg's phrase !

of the Biodynamics division (the folks who test seat and restraint designs
for
certification, among other things).

Richard,
Why should you be exclusively free of losing things?
Are you not aware that statistics prove that, at any one moment,
30% of us (that's72) are scrambling about looking for a screwdriver or
separate manual page, of whom fully a half are stamping, slamming and
swearing? .... that at least ten dogs and cats are cowering under the stove?
....and that four wives are slamming the garage door on the way out?
Have a little compassion..........

Dear Matronics Listers,
Sometime during the next 72 hours, the ISP (Internet Service Provider) for

Ira,
"He is no fan of interial reels either."
Can I ask what 'interial' is? Is that the site of its
base(inside) or a reference to the reel function?
"Also, he thought 3 inches of tempurfoam is not adequate for safely passing

I haven't been around to the back to check contours, but I
suspect my posterior would be content with the quality of 1 to 1-1/2 inches
of that expensive cushioning - on top of stiffer underlayers of course. I
wonder what the good perfesser would think of Graham Singleton's
consideration that a fair depth of foam 'worms' a la beanbag principle had
saved his 'bacon' on pranging?
Nervously,

Hi Fergus!
An inertial reel locks on rapid deployment.
I don't have answers for the seat pan (yet).
A Mechanical Engineering consult would be
very useful here. I will be looking into it, but the
outline of the vision is perhaps an inch of "soft"
honycomb crush zone with a thin aluminum plate
to prevent crushing by stepping on the seat.
