At the risk of starting a controversial debate... can users advise as to the preferred
type of CS prop for a Classic 912 (80hp)? What sort of weight & CG change
is likely from the standard fixed-pitch 3 blade Warp Drive prop?

Hello Ian,
As Jerry at LTS is on holiday at the moment I will put in a brief
sales pitch for the Arplast PV50 combined with the Smart Avionics CS
controller.
The LTS website says the prop weighs 9.1Kg.
I use a PV50 myself and (generally) I am very happy with it. My only
real grumble is that it doesn't have any metal leading edge protection
so the blades do get rather chewed up by stones.
Please take a look at
http://www.avnet.co.uk/touchdown/
and
http://www.smartavionics.com/
Regards,
Mark

Ian, As the owner of what I think is the only Kremen CS prop flying on a
Europa in this country, (and the one who was mug enough to take it through
the tortuous business of PFA approval), I would certainly advise taking a
serious lookm at the Kremen. Several other British Kremen Europas are in
the pipeline, I believe. It weighs 9.8 kg complete with prop, spinner,
wiring bundle, switch gear and CS control box. Total cost US$2300,
comfortably the cheapest option, but this reflects the exchange rate rather
than the quality of the product. Works well, and looks most attractive. More
details from www.woodcomp.cz or give me a ring on 01454 260542 David

Have a look in the Europa accessories guide for the Airmaster CS Prop.
I fly the Airmaster test aircraft which is a Classic 912 powered
aircraft. I can't remember the c of g shift on ZK-UBD as it was a long
time ago that it was fitted. It wasn't huge and we were able to keep the
16AH battery on the forward shelf. That said, I have noticed the
aircraft is happier in the cruise when I've got bags loaded so planning
an aft battery location at the same time would be my personal
recommendation.
On engine weight with blades and spinner is 11.8kg, controller is 0.3kg.
Airmaster can either do a retrofit to your existing spinner if you send
it to them or can supply a new one.
Any CS prop will make a big difference to the way a 912 classic flies.
I did some testing with the pitch fixed at 17 degrees a couple of weeks
ago and I'd forgotten what a difference the CS prop makes on takeoff and
landing. The takeoff seemed to take forever and I found I was to making
my approaches shallower. With the big airbrake out the front in fine
pitch I tend to come in high, descend at a fairly steep angle and then
apply power into the flare to arrest the sink.

I have been happy with the Airmaster on my 914. It has been reliable after
100 hours. It will feather if you have any ideas about gliding.

In what configuration was the honeycomb used? Parallel or perpendicular to
the cells? And presumably the aluminium variety?

Mike, what is the throttle position and is starting with or without the
use of the choke?

Ian and All,
To assist Mark Burton with his final tweaking, I have been flying with one
of his prototype Constant Speed Controllers fitted to my Mono / 912 /
Arplast PV50. So far I have clocked up 27 hrs with the combination and I
can thoroughly recommend the unit to anyone with a PV50. It does all that
the literature claims efficiently and reliably and is very user friendly to
operate. I installed a small lead weight in the tail to compensate for the
extra weight of the hub.
As I fly out of a short, narrow and humped farm strip, I need maximum
continuous power from the engine and maximum concentration from myself for
the take-off. I set the target climb RPM to 5,750, which then provides a
continuous stream of maximum power, regardless of speed, without me having
to worry about coarsening the prop in stages to avoid exceeding the maximum
RPM. As soon as I have raised the gear and flaps and have achieved a
sensible height I reduce the target RPM to 5,400 for the remainder of
initial climb. Fitting the VP prop revolutionise my Europa's performance
and now fitting a constant speed controller has guilded the lilly.
If anyone contemplating one of these units would like to hear more of my
experience, please call me on 01495785499.
Regards,
William
