For those contemplating building or obtaining a trailer, I think this recent thread highlights just one of the advantages of a closed in trailer. As well as providing protection from water ingress, a good closed in trailer also provides protection from :- (a) Sun as well as rain (b) Stone damage from passing vehicles (c) Dust ingress (d) More protection in the event of a vehicular accident (e) Considerable roll over protection (f) Wind gusts from passing trucks (g) Hail damage (h) Better security (if lockable) In my case, it will also be used as the permanent storage location for the aircraft. They also make excellent furniture removal vans! That was just over 230 miles each way, mostly on motorway & dual-carriageway. I had put old carpets and other packing stuff in the nose for the outbound journey, but still found that it was a bit twitchy at the legal limit of 60mph - passing lorries tended to suck out the back end and start a tendency to snake. In the interests of safety I did not exceed 55mph and found it was fine at that speed. On the way back, (although the fuselage & wings do not seem to weigh that much when you're loading them) things felt much more stable and I could cruise at 60mph comfortably (gradients permitting). My trailer was made by Roger Huttlestone of Northwick Manufacturing near Moreton-in-Marsh (01386 700709) for a monowheel Europa, with OMO rigging gear. It's a steel ladder chassis with a glass-fibre (polyester resin) "covered wagon" top (composite D-section hoops, laid-up sheet wrapped over). It is about 8.5m from hitch to tailgate, with the single axle about 5.8m back from the hitch. I have found it very helpful as a store for parts I'm not working on, and the plan is that it will be the hangar when the aeroplane is finished. regards Rowland -- | Wilma & Rowland Carson | ... that's Rowland with a 'w' ... ________________________________ Message 6 _____________________________________ Time: 02:34:52 PM PST US From: "Kevin Taylor" Subject: Europa-List: --> Europa-List message posted by: "Kevin Taylor" Heres what happens when mindless thugs get a change to trash planes at a Airfield. Richard, I don't live in an area where high winds are common so am unable to directly comment on your question. However, the stability of trailers is dependent on many factors so I will just list some of the principles I have employed. (a) Keep the side area as small as possible by making the sides as low as possible. (b) Side areas ahead of and behind the wheels are much the same. Side elevation is of rectangular shape. (c) Four wheel load sharing suspension (d) 50kg to 60kg load on the tow ball Of course, the type of towing vehicle has a big influence on towing characteristics with this sort of trailer (inc glider trailers) I also think you will find that if wind causes a closed in trailer to be unstable, the trouble would not be in the wind so much as it would be the inherent instability of the trailer. The wind would become a trigger just like running off the edge of the road or swerving would be. Having said that, I would expect strong gusty cross winds to buffet the trailer to the extent that you would certainly feel it but I don't see why it should cause a big problem. Then again, I suppose it depends on the definition of strong winds too!! Feel free to contact me off list if you should so desire.
