Dear Europa (UK) supplied Rotax engine owners.
A new dipstick will be sent to all of you, free of charge, as soon as we are sent
a supply, which is expected shortly. Please ensure that you return your old
dipstick to us. This is a requirement by Rotax to ensure compliance.

I spoke to Ray at Europa on Wednesday principally to ask who was supplying
the replacement. This could be Europa, Skydrive or Cyclone Hovercraft in
the UK. Ray said that as my engine was supplied by Europa they would
provide the replacement. At the present time Europa has not received a
supply of dipsticks from Skydrive as their is some discussion going on about
the mechanism for returning the old ones.

It should be noted that this was not an Andair gascolator, it was of a
design almost guaranteed to bung up with any contamination. Andair describe
a test they did to demonstrate this. Because the brass screen is close to
the outlet hole, significant contamination cause deflection of the screen
which then can contact the edge of the outlet, you then have the small
outlet hole covered with contaminated screen.
The screen of the Andair is well displaced from the outlet and placed where
the fuel is moving slowly, (large area).

Further to my note below, I stand corrected. Skydrive will supply the dipsticks
directly, but will require you to contact them to request one. Please supply
details of your engine; type, serial number and your address when you phone,
fax, e-mail or post your request.

Graham, although the Andair filter is well constructed I still had a problem
at the beginning of this year with an almost complete blockage. I had added
fuel from a couple of 10 litre metal fuel cans that I have used for the last
few years. Went flying for an hour, landed and decided to do a run up just
to check the prop setting. At that moment the low fuel pressure lamp on tne
EIS lit and a few seconds later the engine died.
Took the Andair filter apart and found the filter screen completely
obstructed with a fine dust like powder which turned out to be powdered rust
from the fuel cans.
I always filter the fuel I add through a Mr Funnel water seperator funnel
which has a fairly fine filter built in, however this powdered rust had gone
through it.
It was fortunate that this happened on the ground and that I carried out
the power check after landing.
I feel that the Andair filter is possibly too fine as I'm sure this dust
would have easily passed through the carb jets without a problem.
Needless to say, the fuel cans have gone!!

As I understand it, the Andair filters have a 75 micron (metric) screen.
Rotax recommend nothing coarser than 100 micron. So maybe the Andair screen
is not too small.
In any case, the Europa bleed return orifice is 75 micron, so a coarser
filter would risk passing debris that could block this restrictor.

I arrived back from a tour of the Baltic States at midday on Monday (my Europa
flew 50 perfect hours in three weeks) to find the Service Bulletin about the dipstick
change.
As I had to do a 50 hr check, I rang Skydrive, who sent me my new dipstick by return
- the only cost being the postage of the old dipstick back to them. Thank
you, Nigel and co.
I hope that there will be an article in a forthcoming EF about 50 hrs in 3 weeks
- costs, distances, and time spent waiting in airport offices to pay this, that
and the other!

Duncan, I have a 'T' in thefuel linejust engine side of the confluence of my
two parallel arranged electrical pumps. This takes a short length of hose to
the pressure switch, all fixed to vertical ply support under baggage bay. It
has never flickered except when main ran dry x 2. With the 914 the fuel is
being driven through a pressure relief valve which may have something to do
with it. David

Thanks.
Mine is tapped off at the banjo joint on the carburettor float bowl. The
warning light can flicker when taxiing across rough ground (as the float
valve bounces open and relieves fuel line pressure in the near vicinity of
the carb) and when there is any vapour passing through the system (despite
the presence of the vapour return). The latter feature is useful and
disappears when the second pump is turned on.

The best person to speak to is probably Dave Hunter, based at Kemble. I
can't find his email address at the mo. and I'm about to go away for a week.
With a bit of luck, he might follow up to this email. If you don't make
contact, drop me a line and I'll find his address for you.

I have an Europa in Denver that wouldn't mind talking to you about
Subaru power and the related mounting. He doesn't have email (that I know of )
but wouldn't mind a phone call.

Should this help to diagnose such problems, the cutaway diagram of the
914 pressure regulator shows a straight frictionless shot straight to
the carbs. The relief valve sends excess pressure back through the
return line. Like the old style steam pressure cookers that noisily
popped off the steam. Pressure is essentially set by the float valve in
the carbs, since if a high enough fuel flow existed, the relief valve
would be closed and no nothing.
