I have heard that Mathew Leach does good upholstery work in Europa's, but
unfortunatley the telephone number that I have for him is wrong. Can anyone
tell me a good number or e-mail address for him?
TIA, Ian.

For emergency backup such for the 914 pump, rechargeables have a
self-discharge problem making them undesirable as a standalone source.
Though one could constantly trickle charge them with the main system at
a rate which doesn't warm them up. OTOH, shelf life of alkalines is
several years and they are dated, but you're right in that you'll get
better high-discharge rate performance from NiMH's.
The 2600 mAh spec is not comparable to that for storage batteries. A
spec sheet may say 18,000 mAh for an alkaline D-cell, but that's at a
minuscule discharge rate down to .8V. The graph in Energizer's "Pink
Bunny" spec sheet stops at 1 amp discharge rate (the pump is 3A for
planning purposes), and the curve of the line suggests we're looking at
minutes here! It would certainly take a pack of 2 x 8 or 2 x 9 D-Cells,
and then only after test like Dave did.
I note that Dave didn't get 2 hours of 3A pumping on a 7 Ah battery,
terminating at 10+ volts per that usual spec, because it may be based on
a 20-hour discharge rate.
Best,
Fred F.

I suspect my battery is needing replacing. It seems to lose its charge faster
than it should. I was still pumping away at the 1 hour point though, and got
tired of watching it. I think a good condition battery will make the 2 hours.
I don't want to over kill this situation -- just keep the airplane running
and get it on the ground.
The 727 when down to standby power -- battery back up for the electrical
system -- minimum essential equipment -- lasts for 30 minutes. Get it on the
ground!
Dave A.

Hello Fred Fillinger
Thanks for the info. ((the pump is 3A for planning purposes).
Do you know gross amp draw when you are starting?
`````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
True NiMhs do discharge over time, but you can peak charge a 2 or 3 month
stored battery before you complete runup, better yet do it at home or on way to
airport. Good procedure calls for a c/10 for 15 hours once in a while to
maintain balance. Small enough to live in handheld radio/GPS Flight bag, and of
course power these as well.
If all it is you want to run is 3 amps, then Lithium Ion would be the way to
go. Capacity for weight is great. You can not fast charge them though, and self
discharge curve is plenty good.
In addition to using as backup power for fuel pump, I want to use it as
starting assist. This rules out alkalines, Lithium ions (but maby not for
long!) and smaller Lead Acid batteries.
I never ran D sized alkalines at 3 amps, but for sure they will not tolerate a
6 amp load whid i did once attempt. I would test them on the bench, be sure to
try them when they are as cool as it may get in cockpit. Perhaps you may need
to parallel 2 packs.
Iry tdea with small NiMhs, is you peak them on way to airport, it uses 12 volt
input for charging, or peak at home from a 12 volt power supply. If you use as
a starting assist, wait till they are cool and repeak in aeroplane @ 1C.
BTW, does anyone use battery tender for Lead Acid when Aeroplane sits?
