Hell of a lot of discussion for a simple problem.
I have done mine the Europa way, one pump to the alternator and one to the
battery.
If both of those fail I will just look for a suitable field and drop my
little plane in.
I just enjoy the flying!!!!

All
I am very happy to announce that my Europa XS flew for the first time today.
My flying buddy, Bob Jacobsen, did the job. He had only two "squawks". One
was the cockpit heat knob was labeled backwards (he got too hot) and the
other was the transponder did not receive radar. I have fixed the first and
will work on the second problem next.
The plane weighed 878 lb with a CG of 59.75 " , a little forward, but good.
We flew at KPAE (Pane Field, Everett,Washington, USA) . The flight lasted
290 minutes.
I am very happy, it is a great day !

Hi Steve, The crazy angle of the straight edge is how it looks in real life
due to the curve of the doors. I did mine per the manual and they came out
good. I'm not sure what you mean by too high on the door frame tang. In
order to get the top surface of the tangs flush with the top of the fuse I
had to make shims (spacers) out of alum. sheet to fit under the hinge, in
the space where fig. 4 points to 5 min. epoxy. Neville said something about
the door hinge rebates being deeper now. These doors have taken me a whole
lot of time, but have gone well following the manual.
Oh by the way, I got some SS hinge material. I have lots of extra if anyone
wants some.
I just bonded the windows in. Now starting the door strut reverse mod.

OK.. I've measured the hinge placement on the door tangs about a hundred
times how and they are per the manual. When I put the doors on and open them
they're about 1/2 inch too high on the door frame tang. What has everyone
else
done? Just move the hinges down? Is that structurally sound? So far I've
found
chapters 33 and 34 woefully lacking. What's up with the crazy angle the
straight
edge is on in fig 3 page 34-3?

The pocket on my front fuselage door hinge mounting point is 11 mm deep at
its deepest. Since the measurement from hinge center line to end of the longest
point on the trimmed door tang is 22 mm I see now why it wont fit. Anyone else
have this problem? Also the pocket is angled at 50 degs, this only allows the
door to open 18 inches before the tang hits it. The pockets have to go! I'm
going to reform them deeper with 4 ply of bid.
Comments?

Silly question.
Does 912/914 have any meaning?
It is not engine displacement.
Thx.

Personally, I would cut down the tangs (they have no apparent function) and
cover-in the resulting gaping hole between the end of the tang and the edge
of the fus.

Thanks for coming, sorry we didn't realise you were part of the gang at

expect! Give us a call next time and we will know what to look out for.

When filling aileron, what have folk done with the mass balance arms? Given that
I'm going to need to drill the lead weights it seems a bit daft to fill to a
perfect finish at this stage if indeed this is worth doing at all.
Any thoughts greatfully recieved.

Can anyone suggest a primer I can use on Zn-coated steel - i.e. the aileron

aerosol cans, that would be ideal.
I tried red oxide cellulose primer and that just wouldn't stick :-(

Unless Europa has (have) made a change in materials, you have aluminum
(aluminium) tubes in those locations, not galvanized steel. A magnet will
help to convince you which it is. Since these are a heat treated Al alloy
the proper procedure is to first remove the dense oxide that results from
the heat treatment (best done with some rather nasty chemicals) and them
prime with zinc chromate primer (if you can get it).
You can probably get away with good mechanical cleaning instead of working
with the nasty chemicals to remove the oxide - try fine grit sandpaper
followed by a thorough cleaning (soap and water should do it, but be sure to
dry the tubes thoroughly) and then, with minimum delay, spray on zinc
chromate primer, available (maybe) in small spray cans from Aircraft Spruce
(it is in their catalog but I recall that they would not sell it to me when
I inquired a few years ago - "hazardous" stuff, you know).
If you would prefer to have the job done commercially, a better solution
would be to have the tubes anodized. Specifications for automotive Al parts
usually require .0002 to .0003 inch thick anodic coating but architectural
Al requires 0.0007 inch thick (we expect our buildings to last longer than
out cars). If you are worried about the corrosive effect of proximity to
the ocean, specify dichromate sealing of the thicker anodize.
Having said all this I must admit to leaving these parts untreated in my
a/c, trusting the dense heat treat oxide film to do the job. The climate
here is benign with little rainfall and low humidity and I don't live or
store the plane near the ocean so the tubes will survive a long time without
corrosion.
Best regards,
Rob Housman

It will fit with a combination of sanding on the door and the pocket. I
recommend stronger material for the hinges...like steel or stainless.

I concur with Rob on the tubes being aluminum. Your magnet test will be
conclusive. I chose to take most of the tubing from the kit and sent it out to
be
powder coated. They will clean and coat it and you should never have a problem.
You can also pick a nice color. The cost to me was about $80 US and three
days time. Make sure you mask off the bottom of the control sticks where they go
into the CS01 with CS16b spacer. It's a snug fit to begin with.

All,
I just received my Ameri-King ELT from AS and was going over the install instructions
before mounting it under the baggage compartment. I was planning to mount
the antenna on the back side of the baggage bay bulkhead in the horizontal
position, but the instructions state that the antenna should be 20 degrees of
vertical when the aircraft is in a normal flight attitude and if it is mounted
to a non-metallic air frame, a supplementary ground plane must be installed.
What happens if one were to mount the antenna horizontally?
Is there a need for a ground plane in a composite aircraft?
I would appreciate installation tips from builders who have figured this out already.
Thanks in advance
