Ken,
I only flew the Europa once and am a low time pilot so my opinion might not
be as valuable as most. But I think if youre looking for economy and a fun
airplane. Nothing compares to the Europa. I am just about finished with my
airframe. I jump started it at Flight-Crafters in Florida then towed it back
here to Nashville to finish it. My only complaint with Europa is the manual
is in need of up grading and short on drawings. There are simply better ways
and better times of doing things than described. This forum is great and
being able to e-mail the factory is good, but I really am glad to be able to
check in with Bob at flight crafters. As far as the planes performance for
the dollar, and view from the cockpit, nothing compares! I would strongly
recomend this airplane to anyone. Oh and did I say it looks great!
Youre welcome to visit if you want to fly to MQY Smyrna Tennessee. We are
just outside of Nashville.

I really haven't nailed it down yet. Finding a smooth enough day is hard to
come by here. I do know that it is in the vicinity of 25. I have done several
scenarios of engine failure including all the way to a landing from over the
mountains and it does the trick for me -- it makes for a safe single engine
airplane. I have done a little bit of thermal soaring and have managed to stay
up
and climb, although I am not very experienced in gliders.

Hi Alan,
We used the ACS ignition switch and lock set, ordered from A/C Spruce (Model A-510-2K).
This uses one key for both the ignition and both door locks. The switch
is conventional Off-R-L-Both-Start. Worked well for us.

Al,
I used two (2) - double pole, double throw switches with one pole on each switch
a momentary on, one for each mag [ ON-OFF-(ON) switch nomenclature]. They are
wired per Electric Bob's recommendation. The switches are interlocked with
the starter and operate as follows. Either switch in the "down" position grounds
out the respective mag. Either switch in the "middle" position is "mag hot"
for the respective mag. Both switches "up" simultaneously (momentary position)
activates the starter. Either switch "up" by itself does nothing. This
eliminates accidental starting. I really like the setup and have only labeled
the switches as "Left Mag", "Right Mag." Unless you are familiar with this setup
you will be hunting for a starter switch which does not exist on its own
thus adding a level of security.

Sorry to be a couple of days late responding to this one but we have been
touring round Scotland for 3 days. We were in out house at 10 am in Kent and
then in Dundee, Scotland at 3pm, having stopped halfway for lunch and a
leak. What a way to travel.
But back to glide ratios. I have tested this twice in the last month, once
solo and the second time two up and full fuel. Interestingly the results
were identical (which apparently backs up the theory).
Both occasions were evenings and very calm with the small wind component at
90 degrees, and the start and finish at the same point. I started at 3,400
ft (TMA limits us to 3500) and set course for our home field at 75 knots and
with the motor obviously on tickover. The GPS said we had 6.5 km to go. I
arrived at our base on both occasions at 1,200 ft. This works out to 18:1 if
my maths are correct.

Ira - I'm in the queue for that X-Plane model of the Europa if you
can give me a clue where to get it! (Who's Wayne???) I'm happy to be
a beta-tester if that's what it takes. I agree that the method of
modelling in MS FS is a bit flakey and that X-Plane takes the proper
route. This was all expounded in the EAA magazine earlier this year -
I was surprised they were so honest as they (like many others)
usually seem to be in Microsoft's pocket. I cancelled my EAA renewal
this year because they wouldn't do back numbers on CD for Mac after
initially promising that version would be available. A great pity as
the basic technology is cross-platform (browser + PDFs) - they just
had embedded a windows-only search engine too deeply in the design.

Al,
Have you considered the fact that you may have to start the
aircraft with the brakes applied and using the choke? while also
adjusting the throttle. I have!! I have my starter located on my
throttle with a shielded push button. This allows me to operate the
starter while adjusting the throttle to set it to start. I have had
several (fairly often) starts with the firing of only two cylinders as it
shakes then putting the throttle forward and then maybe full idle to get
it to go. I use the choke only after I have initiated the starter. I
need the choke most of the time to get it to go. So as you can see I'm a
one armed paper hanger getting it to start. I get it started and then
when running smoothly, I grab the brake handle to keep it from moving to
far. I really like my starter button on the throttle. Of coarse, when
I install my electric prop I'll just set the pitch to fine or "0" and the
movement of the airframe is a moot point. I have a 912 S engine. My
ignition is two miniature locking switches (lock in the up position and
lock in the down position)on the small panel under the main flight panel.
I then installed a simple removable plug in the push button circuit to
allow for the circuit to be in continuity for starting that is out of the
way and not obvious. The switches are on the far left. I then ran them
to a disconnect at the fire wall so I could remove the small panel at any
time to work on it. It also keeps them away from any accidental
bumping.

Hi David,
According to my calculations, you dropped 2200 feet (3400-1200) and traveled
21,326 feet (6.5 km x 3281 ft/km), giving a glide ratio of 9.7 to 1. We measured
between 10.5 and 11 to 1, which is very close. Also, we noticed that the best
glide speed with prop turning at idle was lower than 75 kts (we use 65 kts for
best glide when not feathering the prop). With prop stopped and feathered, we
get 13 to 1 glide at higher speeds, around 80kts best glide speed.

Chuck, was your glide one way of 6.5 km? If so, I think your calculation
may have an error. If you actually traveled 13km back and forth, then
you did indeed get an incredible L/D of 18. If the latter, and with a
spinning prop, all I can say is 'wow!'
Ignoring significant figures and converting 6.5 km --> 21325 ft:
L/D = (3400-1200)/21325) =~ 9.7
9.7 seems reasonable with a draggy spinning prop and short wings.
Cheers,
Pete

I make this if you were 6.5 nautical miles from base, not kilometres. If you
were 6.5 kilometres then the glide ratio is about 9:1.

My experience is that the 912S engine never needs ANY throttle when starting
hot or cold. Indeed it won't start if you do have any throttle.
So cold is close throttle completely, pull choke and press starter.
Gradually release choke while giving a little throttle to keep it at 2200.
Hot is No throttle, no choke, no nothing, just press the starter, Works
every time. No two cylinder stuff. No shaking.
Stopping, well that is different - it tries to shake my teeth out for half a
second EVERY time I turn it off !

The big question here is what was the wind aloft. I have seen many times in
my flying career where the wind aloft is way different from the wind on the
ground. The way to get the glide ratio is to time a descent at a constant
airspeed and calculate a sink rate, etc...

We considered this situation, and concluded that for convenience and safety,
a good parking brake is an absolute necessity. The Matco valve works
perfectly for us in this capacity. With the parking brake valve set, and
the stick held full aft between the legs, we have just enough hands left to
manage the starter, choke, and throttle, in any combination that we have
needed so far. I can't imagine how else we could safely get something from
the baggage bay, pick up something dropped on the floor, etc., while stopped
on the ground.

Thanks to all who answered my query. I've got more than enough information to make
my decision. It seems the the more complicated ignition systems are for security
reasons. I will probably go with a standard ignition as my philosophy is,
if they can get in they can figure out how to start it. With locks in the doors
they will be hard pressed to fly it with the "gull wings" flapping in the
wind after having to break them to get in.
thanks again

Hello Rowland Carson
Wayne Gutschow is my partner on A-265 monowheel.
I am not sure if he put together a perfect "UNCONVENTIONAL" gear as of yet,
but I know he sent Ira a copy, and I think it may be a nosedragger. also too
I am not quite certain how far along he is with the looonnnnnggg wings.
The Monowheel program is going to get a workout, as we need to come up with
a color scheme.
You can twist his arm at:

Tell him you are active in the Europa Club, and you are prepared to reposess
all forms of Tips and Hints if he dosen't give you what you want!

Curious.
Will the monowheel with 914 and CS nose over at full throttle with the brakes
on?
If so how much % of throttle does it take?
Thanks

Many parts on the europa are Steel with gold colored plating.
I have Dupont self etching primer and would somehow like to make it stick.
What is the best way to prepare the surface?
Thanks

I have another question on the tubes for the split rims. There are 2 nuts and a
washer for each tire. Where do they go. I know one goes to hold the valve stem
out of the hole but am at a quandery as to where the washer and other brass
nut goes in the set up. The only explanation I can come up with is into the notch
in the split rims to keep the tube from sliding agound the rim. Any help will
be appreciated.

I figure there is too much "Atmosphere" inside my wings, and am trying to find
things to fill up the voids.
So far:
wires and a tube to power tip strobes/nav lights
wires to outrigger fairing in case I want to put landing lights in the fairing
stall warner
airspeed/pitot
Any other useful things you can think of?
Antennas?
Thanks

Ron,
Self rigging dolly receptacles.
I copied an idea from Chuck Popenue I consider a neccesity, especially if
you plan to trailer your Europa. Keep in mind I have the classic wings but
it should be adaptable to the XS kind. It is a tube (aluminum)floxed into
the wingtip (and reenforced)that will accept a steel rod (about 12"),that is
welded an adjustable upright,(square tube inside a larger square tube)
welded to a set of locking castors (5 or 6") that supports the wing while
you are on the spar end single handedly rigging the wings. Works great for a
rotator while finishing too. I found some tight fitting hole plugs to keep
in the tip tubes when not in use.Hope this makes sense. Chuck has pictures
on his site. Thanks again Chuck.

I have not done it - yet ! Hop to never do it. Every time I have done full
power run-up tests (Airmaster prop adjustments) I have loaded the tale down
with 4 sand bags and tied the tale wheel to my truck. One time I did run up
with out this arrangement far enough to lift the tail a little. That was
enough !

Anyone have a number of hours flying at night at airports without great
lighting?
Anyone flying with just 1 light, or lights aimed between taxi and landing
positions?
Or is preference to have one adjusted for taxi, and 1 for landing.
What type of lights, and what location on aeroplane?
I have Monowheel.

Probably not.. but I can get a 912/Airmaster mono to lift its tail and
do a 180 at 5000rpm :)

All they need to do is take the doors off and fly below 100 knots!
Let's face it.. getting into a Europa, even with door locks, is childs
play.

=0D=0A> But back to glide ratios. I have tested this twice in the last month,=0D=0A>

the results=0D=0A> were identical (which apparently backs up the theory).=0D=0A=0D=0AApparently
being the operative word, the fact is a fully loaded aircraft
will glide further than an empty one!=0D=0AThe short version of the explanation
is that once you have lugged all that mass all the way up there, you have
much more potential energy stored and that is then converted into kinetic energy
when you start gliding...=0D=0AAnd if one wants to measure glide or speed
using GPS or land fixes, I believe the normal procedure is to do it both ways
or in a triangle and take the average for a result and then there is still the
possibility of the winds having changed during the trial.=0D=0A=0D=0A....and
while I'm on the forum I'd like to apologize to the Melbourne Europa chapter for
not being able to visit after all, a busy schedule coupled with a premature
departure to Abu Dhabi meant I had no way of getting to meet with them.=0D=0AI
had looked forward to get to meet up with other builders to see their birds
as I don't get that chance when home in Brazil.=0D=0A=0D=0AAlex, kit 529- still
waiting for missing parts, over a year on and still nothing from the factory
