The long answer is... The plating is an anti-corrosion treatment applied by the factory - Zinc plating with a chromic passivation. I haven't found anything that sticks to it... But then, why try to corrosion protect something that is already corrosion protected? All you do is add weight. I would imagine that if you really, really wanted to paint it, you'd have to abrade off the coating. And how you'll manage to do that down the middle of the aileron torque-tubes will be a challenge. A squirt of ACF-50 down the middle of the sealed tubes (pitch torque-tube, under seat aileron pushrods) wouldn't harm, though. Currently all three are in. These are made by Bob Archer for us. We have tested them in the Europa, and found them to work well. Cost is $85 each. We also stock the "economy" version dipole com antenna that we make for $26. It works pretty good for the cost - especially if you mount it high in the vertical stab. Happy Building!! In my usual bike - presently a schleicher K8, it would be possible only with a nil wind or a tail wind, as the major factor with wooden gliders is lack of penetration. Believe the standard wing Europa can soar quite well, especially in France where the thermals are that bit stronger. I have personal experience of adding a few knots to the cruise of a europa by using some of natures energy. A fellow glider pilot and Euopa owner (with an huge amount of gliding experience) recalled to me a few weeks ago, he managed to nurse his Europa home with the help of several thermals all the way from the South of France with an hiccupy engine, power was kept mostly at idle to keep the engine temp within acceptable limits... Gliding any type of aircraft is dependent on flying extremely accurately to get the full potential from the conditions. I'm lead to believe one can get further flying an average L/D aircraft very efficiently, than a high performance ship in-efficiently. Its not the size - its what you do with it... :-) Have Fun Paul, The 'bleep'ing glider pilot.... I really meany 6.5 nm and not 6.5 km which you should be able to work out to 18:1. As for the winds aloft, I can only say that the windsock at the airfield was barely moving and that was displaying a crosswind component to my flight path, and as I was not more than 3,400 ft and slowly decreasing in height for the flight the wind component I am sure can be considered of no real assistance. Of course we could argue the small points ad infinitum, but I can assure you that the biggest boost my grey matter has received from the excercise was the graphic demonstration of just how far one can get in the event of a problem. Of course I will always search out the nearest field if that moment ever comes, but it is real nice knowing that the field does not have to be within 1 mile if I am above 2,000 foot and over a forest or somesuch. Are there any NY builders out there? I am going to the Orange County area, about 60 miles north of NYC. I will also be making some trips north of there into the Catskills. Would like to stop by and compare notes and check out hardware. Steve Hagar A143 Mesa, AZ --- Steve Hagar --- hagargs@earthlink.net
