Hello Steve
I am located on Long Island NY. Have a Monowheel. Have trailer with most stuff
on it. Movable rudder, elevators done and into the wings/flaps/ailerons.
Building at hanger @ Islip Macurthur airport.

Subject: | Europa XS 'conventional' landing gear |
--> Europa-List message posted by: "Rick Heis" <u1c04209@mail.wvnet.edu>
Greetings,
Long time observer of this list but this is my first post.
I am getting real close to making the commitment to build a Europa XS. I really
like the option with the two sets of wings. I have a few questions though.
(1) At Oshkosh a couple years ago, I saw an Europa at the Europa booth with conventional
landing gear (actually have a picture of it). I have done some research
and can't seem to find much information on this since then. Is this an
option or mod from the factory? Is there a company that provides this option?
Has anyone done this mod and can give me feedback? Why has the factory
not offered this mod, when they had it on display at Oshkosh?
(2) Can anyone give me opinion or feedback about the pro's and con's of the conventional
gear mod? One thing I can think of is it would free up some tight cabin
space in the thigh and leg area due to a not needed mono retract wheel.
(3) I did see a company that has this mod available but nothing by the company
or pilots about this mod. I am not set in stone about this mod, but it has several
appealing qualities. I just need to know if its technically safe and sound
and 'airworthy'? I will list the web page of this company.
http://isuisse.ifrance.com/CCandE/europa.htm
Please tell me all I need to know. Is there any web sites or archives that I can
look at to answer some of these questions.

Greetings,
Just visited the Liberty XL2 web page.....quick question.
Is there any of the parts from the liberty that we can purchase and fit easily
into the Europa XS?
For example, the interior looks very pretty...are the parts interchangeable? The
panel, the seats, the console, the carpet, etc.
What about the nose cowl?
Just thought since they are basically the same aircraft (like GM and Chevy) some
parts would be interchangeable. and expensive.

Hi! Rick.
Highly unlikely because the Liberty wings are metal and undetachable, the
a/c is wider and higher and it takes a bigger engine. Also the controls are
in a module and accessable under the cockpit.
Of course you can go to lots of trouble and effort to make substitutions if
you want to throw money at it!

The two aircraft are actually very different internally. You wouldn't
find much, if anything at all, from the Liberty which would fit a
Europa.

What you probably saw was an aftermarket kit from Flightcrafters. Europa
do not have a conventional gear option.

Hi All,
I am interested to buy the constant speed SR200 Woodcomp propeller.
Do you have any technical information and advice to this propeller ?
My project is to use this propeller with Rotax 912 UL on a XS Europa.
Has anyone, some personal experience ?
Any information ?

Hi Steve,
You did not mention when you will be in NY. I don't think my Europa will
by up from Florida
until December. There is another builder partnership also on Long Island,
namely Ron and Wayne
and their AC is here on LI. I am told there is one in CT but I have no
details.

This is absolutely marvellous.
Since i will begin building in a few weeks, this information, these
gotchas, are probably more usefull then any clever mod seen sofar.
Keep it going, and of course, i will add mine as well.
To start, before having started:
The door of the specially built worshop, is just high enough for the
monowheel.
But not when on the trailer...:-(

Hi Rick,
The Liberty is actually quite different. It is larger (throught the fuselage/cockpit)
and uses quite different construction. The
fuselage is metal tube and the wings and control surfaces are aluminum vs all fiber
glass for the Europa. Its fuel tank is bigger
and it uses an engine that would be too heavy for a Europa, with a cowl specific
to it.
I doubt there is anything from the Liberty that could be used on a Europa.

Hi Rick,
I understand that Bob Bierbe (spelling ?, sorry Bob) at FlightCrafters has been
working on a conventional gear design for quite a while, and is in early flight
testing now. I heard he was considering a kit, eventually.
It is unlikely that you will get back the space lost in the mono-wheel tunnel.
This area of the cockpit module is a major part of the fuselage structure. The
tri gear Europas do not recover this as cockpit space (although it can be used
for storage).
You would free up the baggage bay space consumed by the tri gear main gear, certainly
an advantage.
I like the looks of the conventional gear Europas I have seen (only in photos),
and would think it is a good compromise between the mono and tri gear versions.
The mono-wheel can really bite you if you don't watch it, and the tri-gear
just has one too many legs, IMHO.

Terry Seaver

Hi Ken,
My partner and I have a flying Europa XS down in Livermore, California (near
the San Francisco Bay area). We would be happy to give you a ride if you
happened to be in the area some time. Ours is a mono-wheel XS with 912S
engine and Airmaster CS prop. We have been flying for two years and have
nearly 300 hours on it by now.

Hi,
Your door must be very low! I thought I would have problems as my door is
only 75.25 inches high. I can just get the plane through on the trailer, if I
wind the jockey wheel right down.
Also, have a strobe on top of the fin which is about 3-4 inches high.

There must be a standard international garage door height which clashes
with the Europa fin! I came within a couple of mm of scraping the top of
my just painted fin when I came to roll the plane into the garage on its
trailer for the first time a few weeks back. It was only when the fin
was halfway along the door that I noticed just how close it was.
Lowering the jockey wheel fixed the problem.
Incidentally, before starting the build I'd worked out that I'd be clear
of the door.. what I failed to take into consideration was the XS
tailwheel mod which has raised the back of the aircraft.

Amazing. Measured again, and it's 183.5 cm which converts to 72.244 inch.
Strobe somewhere else and it would fit eh?
And maybe the guy who offered to build me a trailer can add something to
lower the tailwheel a bit more, if even only during that fase of the
operation. Will keep you informed.

Apparently now it's Staverton (Gloucestershire), but just aim for EGBJ and see
what they respond with when you call them on the radio(!)
Must have got the same disease as Halfpenny Green, when they changed their name
to West Midlands international or whatever it is now...
