Dear All,
I have ordered my Europa XS which has yet to be delivered, but am now planning
to emigrate to New Zealand if I'm successful in my job aplication. The PFA doesn't
exist in NZ, but I gather another organisation similar to the PFA does. Does
anyone have any information about homebuilts in NZ etc?

Ron,
Just be thankful that your Peel Ply had the red marker threads in it. Mine
and other I suspect others of the same vintage had none and was very hard
to detect indeed.

This is not a regulatory organisation but does issue the maintenance
schedules for NZ Custombuilts.
In NZ we treat all custombuilts as first of type. You may build and
modify as you wish and there are no stage inspections. There is a CAA
inspection prior to first flight at which time the aircraft enters a
phase 1 test programme. The test pilot, who must have 100 hours PIC
experience or 200 hours for a taildragger and a type rating for the
aircraft, is required to complete a 40 hour test programme and make a
statement that the aircraft is safe to operate in all tested modes of
flight upon completion of the test flight programme. The manoevres, Vne
and MAUW demonstrated during the test flight programme become the
operating limitations for that particular aircraft.
Custombuilts may fly night and IFR is properly equipped but may not fly
over populous areas. After 100 hours of safe operation an application to
remove the populous area overflight restriction is generally granted.
Regards
Tony

Tony, you are entirely too modest. You should have also referred Nigel to
what is undoubtedly the world's best Europa blog at

Gidday,
The ease at which the paint chips off the white coloured metalwork might
suggest I don't need to ask this question, but to those who know, and I
don't, is the best way to strip one back to sandblast off the paint, or is
there another recommended way that doesn't compromise the frame. Also, is
there a no of different configurations of bracing for the same frame, for a
912? The frame doesn't match the manual picture, so I'm confused.

If you have the early manual and the later engine frame there will be a
difference. I assume that the difference you are seeing is a diagonal
support that didn't appear in the early diagrams... that's the bottom of
the frame.

Don't feel foolish all by yourself, I messed up a set of flaps by
missing the peel-ply. All I had ever seen was the bright green stuff.
I spent much of a day trying to remove peel-ply from the flap root and
all I did was de-laminate a section of the flange glass so I gave up
and thought that the double sided tape was what they were referring to.
I went on to complete the flap closeouts. Later, while having
difficulty with the wing-root layups, I noticed the red thread and
found the transparent peel-ply that was the problem. Upon this
realization, I went back and shredded a portion of a flap closeout and
located the peel ply there. I ordered a new set of flaps and
associated hardware and had to do them all over again. I suggested to
Europa that they use the bright green peel ply or they modify their
intro class to at least show the white peel ply. I guess they have not
taken either of my suggestions.
