Hi All,
This week's venue is Old Sarum, voucher in Flyer. I appreciate
its a long way for some, but I think its a good idea to move it around a
bit. We might even see a one or two new faces from the South/Southwest, and
the food is good!. For those that don't know Old Sarum, its in the Boscombe
MATZ, so in the week you have to talk to Boscombe on 126.7 and observe the
standard ARR/DEP procedures via Alderbury.
As to the day - the BBC forecast favours Tue or Thur (
Weather.com is completely different, so who knows ? }. Watch this space!!!.
Cheers, Paddy Clarke. do not archive

Hi! Guys........... and Gals!
Who said the Blighty weather was crap?Hear this you chaps in OZ and NZ , What a
fantastic day out to Connington..........again, with "wall to wall" blue skies
and 1032 millibars.
Hope you landed safely William ? but I expect a grass landing wouldn't be a problem
with the pooly leg.
I reported a DOOR STRUT on the 10 "charlie" departure point at Connington. Probably
off a Europa and may even be yours William since I guess you had the door
open just prior to your departing?
Anyway I asked the controller to arrange to pick it up so they may just have it
saved if "who ever" contacts them.
Pity about the =A310 landing .... never thought to buy another Flyer for the voucher!
Nevertheless good company, good food and excellent new facilities, highly recommendable
to those who haven't sampled it yet.
Don't think I can find the time this week to make Old Sarum ...Paddy as much as
I'd enjoy it , getting to "headless chicken time " cases to pack etc. etc.
Just in case I don't make it (to the next few Fly IN trips!) I'd like to extend
wishes to "all and sundry" for a Happy Christmas and safe flying for the forthcoming
year . Hey! two weeks and the days start getting longer !!!!!!!
Be sure to order the next issue of "Today's Pilot Mag"..... there's a good Europa
item in it !!!!

Subject: | Brake master Cylinder |
--> Europa-List message posted by: Richard Holder <rholder@avnet.co.uk>
Hi Team
As a diversion from trying to balance my carbs today (don't ask - not good
news) I decided I would adjust my brakes. I use the two tri-gear master
cylinders but in the wheel well, to provide finger brakes.
The first one went well (adjustment involves adding brake fluid into the
filler hole in the master cylinder), the second went really badly and I have
ended up cross-threading the filler screw.
Damn, big mistake as accessibility in there is not good.
Retapping is possible but I will have to be careful to keep the swarf away
and indeed to clean it out well.
Does anyone know what size the thread is ? It would seem to be the same size
as the drain plug on the oil reservoir.
Alternatively a new master cylinder is called for :-( Does anyone have a
spare or a source for this item ?
For now I have got the filler screw in and it doesn't leak but it is not a
permanent fix.
Tomorrow I will test-fly AGAIN to see if I have fixed the misfire. I found
that one throttle cable outer where it is fixed to the throttle lever
housing was loose. Access to that was fun too (involved removal from the
carbs) ! And of course that meant I had to balance the carbs again. I have
bought the 52 carb balancer but it gave weird readings, not helped by the
"Cable breaks -> full throttle" aviation approach. If I got the thing
balanced at 5000 rpm then it never got a sensible idle. Either one carb in
the green or the other - never both !
Does anyone have any advice ? I ended up making the adjustments until it
felt right ! So much for the balancing gauges ! I must have started it up 30
times today. Each time I got in, started up, took reading, stopped, jumped
out, made adjustments; got in .... All at Stapleford in the cold and on the
grass.
I am losing confidence in this thing - I have done 55 hours of which 25 have
been since the misfire started - it happens randomly but too often for
comfort. I never travel far from my home base now.

Yes. These weekEND fly-ins are very popular; eight (or was it nine) Europas
turned up at Conington today. Well done Chaiman Allsop for such an original
idea!

Subject: | Completed cost for VFR & IFR Europa Tri-gear |
--> Europa-List message posted by: asdfa afa df <ccs_mysticdeath@yahoo.com>
Hello everyone,
I have narrowed it down to the Europa XS Tri-Gear with 914 rotax & the Super Pulsar
100.
I have some questions:
1) How much does it cost to build this airplane is $75,000 U.S. close?
I plan on getting both quick build kits, 914 rotax engine, speed kit, & the CS
prop.
2) how does the plane handle would it make a good IFR plane (is it twitchy or does
it track smoothly.
3) what is the range and speed you get with 75% power on average and can you get
the extended range fuel tank for the tri-gear? as i plan to do a lot of cross
country flights. I'm in Iowa and have family in Florida & Montana.
4) comfort and sitting position? on extended cross countries are you comfortable
and are you setting straight or are you at an angle because of the space taken
up with the mono wheel in the cockpit module?
5) to build the plane how difficult is it, I have built RC planes will i be able
to build this plane?
Thank you for your time and information look forward to your responses.

Hi Jerry,
I'd like to offer a few comments to your questions.
> 1) How much does it cost to build this airplane is $75,000 U.S. close?
Avionics, paint and interior really drive this number, in particular
avionics. To give you some kind of indication I will have less than 70k
into my project which has a modest IFR panel.
> 2) how does the plane handle would it make a good IFR plane (is it twitchy
or does it track smoothly.
I have only flown a Europa for a couple of hours, but folks who do fly them
IFR tell me the track the glideslope quite nicely
> 3) what is the range and speed you get with 75% power on average and can
you get the extended range fuel tank for the tri-gear? as I plan to do a lot
of cross country flights.
I don't have enough time in type to give you accurate numbers but John Hurst
flew the factory 914 from Lakeland to Milwaukee in 6.5 hours, (one stop).
At 17,500 feet John was seeing 185 knots
> 4) comfort and sitting position? on extended cross countries are you

the space taken up with the mono wheel in the cockpit module?
Cabin ergonomics really depend on how big you are. Tall people recline more
and I told its quite comfortable.
> 5) to build the plane how difficult is it, I have built RC planes will I
be able to build this plane?
If you have built models you have a significant advantage. Factory support
is outstanding.
The best advice I can offer is to go fly a Europa before you purchase
anything.

I have wired two Europas here in the USA. They have Nav Lights and Landing
lights. I used Amp round connectors to make the panels removable. One radio
and an intercom. The engines used a Rocky Mountain uMonotor. The panel was
all electric and VFR. I say all of this because to answer your question, we
need to know what you are wiring into your plane.
In my case it took 200 feet of #18, 250 feet of #20 and 150 feet of #22. And
I used 100 feet of shielded #20. There was some #8 for battery to buss also.
I bought 100 feet of coax and there was not much of it left over either.
These are number that I can safely guess form recollections of each plane.
Like I said, it depends on what you will be wiring.

Thanks Duncan,
Yes, it was nine Europas (and one Beagle?). Roger Mills and his wife Doreen
sneaked in un-noticed in UV. Still the weather made a great contribution,
and the people and ambience at Connington completed it.
Sadly though, I fail to see how regular weekend Fly-ins could work, because
you cannot plan the weather.
The principle of the current arrangement is based on being able to go when
the weather lets you. It uses the baton principle to pass the choice of free
landing fee venue to different people. They then have one chance to make it
good by choosing what they consider to be the optimum date from our
wonderful random selection of weather. This mailing list then enables the
process to work. If you can go, you go. If you can't, you can't. Lets face
it, the choice of day could turn out to be a week end, but we must remember
that the most likely supporters are going to be the mid week fraternity.
Retired old gits like me who are looking for somewhere to go during the
week. That is why it is nominally a mid week format.
However!!!!!!!! There is nothing to stop anyone from putting up a shout for
a week-end day, particularly if they see a weather slot coming up!!!!!!!
We old boys will be delighted to gate crash a workers Fly-in.
Finally. I finished up travelling with an empty seat today, so who's been
talking?
Have fun flying.......Bryan PS (And building)

I had a rough running problem with my 912S when I first started flying it.
We finely found a note in the ROTAX book about the carbonator vent tube not
being in the air box. It had come loose several times, and I had not
thought much about it. WRONG !!! That little tube is very important. It
must be at the same air pressure as the intake air. I fixed the "falling
out" problem and the rough running went away.
Just thought this might help.

HI
My little tubes are fitted into the airbox. However I see the manual implies
that the t-piece should be on the inside of the airbox and the tube should
be pressed on from outside. [Thus there is no tube inside the airbox and
there is a small part of the t-piece outside]
On mine the tube goes through the hole in the airbox and the tube join with
the t-piece is inside the airbox. [Thus there is no t-piece outside the
airbox and there is a short length of tube inside]
Might this make a difference ?

These are my figures
I actually bought more in most cases and these figures are the result of
subtracting any balance remaining from the amount I bought :-)
4AWG : 20 feet
10AWG : 21 feet
12AWG : 7 feet
14AWG : 4 feet
18AWG : 1 foot
20AWG : 42 feet
22AWG : 96 feet
18AWG single plus screen : 10 feet (mag cables) *
20AWG single plus screen : 19 feet
22AWG single plus screen : 32 feet
22AWG twin plus screen : 10 feet (overhead headset) *
22AWG triple plus screen : 10 feet (overhead headset) *
RG400 screened antenna, better quality for TXPDR : 12 feet
RG58AU screened antenna : 25 feet *
* means that it was a bit tight and I should have bought and used a little
more
If I did it again I would use lots less 10AWG and use doubled up 14AWG
instead as it fits in connectors better.
I would use 16AWG for mags if I did it again
I used four different AMP connectors for the major connection to the panel
plus some other inline connectors at each component.
I used screened cable to keep positive and earth together for runs to the
rear - fuel pump, fuel gauge, flaps, ptt x 2, strobes, stall warner

The air pressure must be equal in the tube and the intake. I think your
"Ts" are OK.
Have you considered icing? Do you have carb heat? I have the hot water
type. It works fine, if I turn it on. If not, runs rough at the end of a
fast clime out.
Good luck.

that is easily the best way to recharge some poor builder's batteries when
he might well be fed up with incessant sanding and filling or
whatever. "Goon on yer mate!", as my friend Kingsley would say. Mal McLure
gave him a nice ride, (me too) which I'm sure helped us both.
Encouragement is very valuable in a long , expensive project and evidence
of the fun that is being enjoyed by quite a few, by now, will spur on some,
at least , to get their project finished.
I'm lucky, I have a bunch of EZ friends as well as all my Europa friends.
Two families for the price of one, you might say.

Subject: | Layup on Balsa TE of Trim Tabs |
--> Europa-List message posted by: Tony Renshaw <tonyrenshaw@optusnet.com.au>
Gidday,
I am wondering if there is any specific advice to laying up cloth onto the
trim tabs trailing edges to toughen them up. The balsa is too soft and I
intend on either using a single ply of BID, or 2 plies over the balsa with
the ply stepping down as it progresses forward, or a single ply of carbon.
I have the carbon left over from another project, however I think for this
toughening up application the BID might be better, as it is more impact
resisitant. With the Balsa, I have heard of priming it with a thinned down
resin mix, but I haven't done this before. I understand the concept is that
a thinner mix will be absorbed by the Balsa, and act as a better key for
the cloth over the top. So, if there are any words of wisdom on this I'd
like to hear. Thanks in anticipation.

Balsa can be "hardened" with out adding very much weight by using thin super
glue. Squirt the thin stuff all over the balsa and quickly wipe it with a
rag . We do that in the model boat building hobby too.
I think you would have trouble getting BID to wrap around the TE and still
give you a good sharp edge.
