I hope everyone uses jointing compound anyway. Duralac is a messy chromate
paste which helps prevent corrosion due to different metals being in
electrical contact. Carbon fibre parts also cause corrosion of metal parts,
especially steel.
Where two conducting objects are in contact and there is water around, a
small battery is created, the resulting current causes the corrosion.
Sorry about the clumsy description, I can't remember the technical words.
Graham

I have seen some vey neat ways of getting stuff thro' the firewall,
often with quite large panels removed. Does anyone know what the
implications for strength are and if the PFA/factory would have a view
on minimising cutting the firewall ?

Hi! Paul.
I copied a Factory cut out panel to give access to the rear of the panel and
instruments then also decided to do another cut out behind the radio stack
since I was having to get calculations done for the first one.
It is quite critical that any holes are made good by flange strengthening
the perimeter of any cut outs. I used 2" wide1/16 thick stainless with
stainless pop rivets (to ensure the fire wall remained intact) about every
two inches spacing round to fix the flange to the rear of the firewall
then used anchor nuts on the inner portion of the flange to clamp the
removable piece of firewall back into place with bolts and spreader washers
also every 2 " spaced. However I also embodied a sheet of thin aluminium
over the entire rear of the firewall to stop radio interference from the
induced ignition system. This sheet of alloy was also considered to be part
of the new structures strength capability.
If you visit the support pages operated by John Cliff , click on to "Bob
Harison's Europa" and select "Firewall" you will get the idea. The PFA do
have an approved mod. submission for it . In addition you will see that the
rectangular portion behind the radio stack also coincides with the flanges
of the Air Filter Housing ( Jabiru!) which also serves to stiffen the
assembly back to the original integrity.( http://www.crix.org.uk )
My panel is now not required to be removed because all access can be made
from the forward firewall position except to coin the frase it is "very busy
in there"!

Does the factory have a template, or just measurements? I would like to cut
this panel and bump the cover out to fit my EFIS Lite.
Thanks,

Subject: | Hose recommendations |
--> Europa-List message posted by: "Paul McAllister" <paul.mcallister@qia.net>
Hi all,
I need a couple of recommendations:
What is the best type of hose to use to come from the engine to the manifold pressure
gauge. I need something that can handle the cowl temperatures.
How have people been penetrating the firewall with the manifold pressure hose.
I could machine up a fitting but I'd rather not spend a couple of hours on the
lathe if there is a better way.
I need to fit a 5/8" hose from the vacuum pump to the firewall. I see AC Spruce
have a silicon hose good to 350 degrees but it looks bulky, Id be interested
in knowing what others have used.
Thanks, Paul

It looks like yesterday turned out much better than the forecast; it
certainly was in Wales, but I don't know about the eastern half of the UK.
Tomorrow is now looking a bit iffy and suggests rain or heavy showers moving
west to east. Friday is looking better depending on timing of the next
front coming in from the Southwest.
I will review again this evening to see if we should fall back to Friday.
Any expert comments welcomed.
Regards,
William
