"Before doing this I queried the factory about how it might affect
engine cooling, and as I expected, there is no reason for concern."
I hope you are right.
By your description, it sounds like you have a 914 engine. I have just
finished doing a similar mod on my 914 monowheel. The major difference is
that I made the flap behind the coolers adjustable with a bowden cable. In
summer the 'air scoop' can be retracted completely so that is does not
interfere with the airflow.
Last summer in Europe we had unusually high temperatures mid to high 30s C
and I found that keeping the engine temperatures under control was very
speed dependant - a climb speed in excess of 100kts was necessary to keep
the temps down. In the cruise there was no problem at all, and in winter it
is hard to get the temps up at all.
I have not flown with the heater mod yet as I am waiting for the PFA to
approve the installation. However, it looks promising during the post
annual servicing engine run - I could feel some warm air coming through.
Incidentally, I have lowered the oil cooler as suggested in the engine
installation manual - again, I have yet to fly the aircraft to see how
effective the change is.
Living in California, with your weather factor, you might at least want to
have the lowered oil cooler.
Having said all that, some people have had cooling problems and others have
not.

Mike

Right you are. It's a 914, and the coolers are staggered so each gets cool
air (I wonder what the folks at Europa were thinking when they devised the
original arrangement).
My original plan was the same, make the flap move to snag hot air or not,
but it seemed that the mechanical linkage to close the flap against the
force of the air flow would be needlessly complex. I briefly considered
that the flap might obstruct cooling air flow but I made an assumption that
the factory did NOT design the cooling duct to provide barely sufficient air
flow, but instead that there was more than enough air flow. Ergo, a postage
stamp sized obstacle would not make any difference in engine cooling.
What you folks call a heat wave, we call summer.
Best regards,
Rob Housman

Evening All
Does any one know where I can get the prop/spinner dynamically balanced?
The only source we know appears to charge around 350 for the service.
Based at Kemble but can travel.
Thanks
Pete

I'm looking at my baggage with the top off. Everyone says that the lay-ups on
the D are a pain. Can I splash flange the D shape and redux it in when the
top goes on? Then I don't have to climb back there at all. Haven't been back
there yet and I'd like to keep it that way.

Subject: | Length of Dipole Antenna |

Gidday,
I am about to install my Europa dipole antenna to the back of my sternpost,
and have a couple of questions regarding ideal length etc of each portion
of antenna. Annex C at the end of the manaul outlines to make each portion
515 mm initially in length. The dimension in the schematic uses the
dimension of 490*mm, so it is obvious to me there is a point somewhere
within this range that is what I am after. Does anyone else have a more
refined starting point?

My D bulkhead fit in kind of funny. That is, It got bonded in place where
it fit best. I don't think you will be able to make a splash that will fit
tight enough to the fuselage and to the D bulkhead. I did not consider
doing it that way at the time, so don't know if I would have tried to do it
that way.
I did find a way to work through the D bulkhead more easily though. It was
simple. I just blocked up with plastic buckets to the height of the cut-out
and laid a piece of plywood through and then laid on it . Across the top of
the fuel tank between the headrests and the buckets. It is a little tricky
getting in and out, but I have used it sever time. ( Try adding the electric
flap servo after the baggage bay is installed!!!!!)

I asked if I could add the electric flap servo with a mono wheel and was told
no. I never like the idea of full flaps every time, but loved the design so
much I still went with the Europa.
So, you can add the servo?

To clarify: I am converting my mono to a trike. The factory kit uses an
electric flap servo.
In thinking about what you said, I think your Europa would be a complex
plane. That would require you to get an endorsement. We don't have to now
because the landing gear and flaps are connected together. If you separate
them, your get "complex", as I understand it. That said, yes it could be
done easily!

Steve:
I didn't make an entire splash moulding as I could see that the profile I
had of the top of the baggage bay was not an exact fit. What I did before
I put the top on was to mark where the top of the bay would go along the
edge. Then I made several fiberglass angles and bonded them to the top of
the fuselage to match up with the backside of the top of the baggage bay.
That way I had something to push against when laying up the front side of
the mount. After the front had cured I went to the backside with short
layups to go around the backside of the D shape. It wasn't as big a hassle
as puts it to be.
