--> Europa-List message posted by: "Ami McFadyean" <ami@mcfadyean.freeserve.co.uk> Agreed. Although with electric flaps there is no need to take off with full flap and therefore more flap for landing should feasible. As you'll know, the matter was written up in an early Factory Newsletter. From memory, the optimum for landing was in excess of 30 degrees; less than that and there was not a large amount of additional drag. Which is the problem I have. Duncan. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Graham Singleton" <graham@gflight.f9.co.uk> Subject: Europa-List: Electric flap servo? > --> Europa-List message posted by: Graham Singleton <graham@gflight.f9.co.uk> > > At 23:56 16/01/2004 -0800, you wrote: > >Electric flap servo? > > > >--> Europa-List message posted by: "Ami McFadyean" > ><ami@mcfadyean.freeserve.co.uk> > > > >Landings are fine if you can get the flaps down far enough. William/Rick/Duncan Regretfully I won't be using Manchester Barton again. far too bumpy and loose material is rutted when I was last there about 4 months ago and winter in Manchester won't have improved it since then. They do make you welcome though and would be quick to salvage the pieces! If my bird is still not grounded yet I wouldn't mind Tattenhill Sorry I've not been into the "Saga Sarga's " lately but not felt up to it, and Friday was a "no go" from here.Sorry about that Rick. I would like to get to Bembridge before my Son leaves his contract at Sea View on the 13th Feb. however ! I'm doing a couple of "flight experiences" tomorrow(Sunday ) and may make Sheffield a target! Although this is not cheap it is far cheaper than the other (Midlands based) company who wanted about 295. If you fly down to Exeter they can meet you at an engineering base on the north side who can get you a reduction on the landing fee. They can be contacted on 01884 855327. Mentioning the Europa Club should ensure you get a discount. It might be worth the club purchasing the equipment if the cost is no more than 1500. We would need to look into the expertise required in using the equipment and ensure we have the necessary fittings for mounting the sensors for the range of engines used. As the capital cost is significant a rental charge would need to be made so that most of the investment was recovered. This subject has come up once before at club committee meetings. If there is enough interest I will bring it up again at the next meeting. Nigel Charles

--> Europa-List message posted by: "Ami McFadyean" <ami@mcfadyean.freeserve.co.uk> I have a fixed pitch 64" WD set at 20.5 degrees. The idle is set to 1400rpm, but by pulling back hard against the closed-stop this can be reduced to 1200. All this helps, but not enough. Having said that, the take-off distance is well balanced with the landing distance. The one shown here costs about 2500 USD (L1500). If the Club gets one I'll offer to write a manual to accompany its use for 912 's. But it really is straightforward. I've no idea how big/heavy the thing is, but I can't imagine that posting it to US or Australian members would be practical. At 50 per go we'd have to hire it out 30 times to recoup the captial outlay. For comparison, the VSWR meter has been out 19 times since November 2000 and the Carb balancer 9 times since December 2002. The capital outlay on those was of course much smaller, and no charge is imposed for loan of either. regards Rowland -- | Rowland Carson Europa Club Membership Secretary | Europa 435 G-ROWI (660 hours building) PFA #16532 | e-mail <memsec@europaclub.org.uk> website <www.europaclub.org.uk>

--> Europa-List message posted by: RMRRick@aol.com Hello Nigel I have had my prop (CS pv50) balanced several times at Cambridge and am pretty unimpressed. I think this has to do with technique and operator knowledge as well as the need for either nil wind or the ability to start the engine in the hanger. Incidentally the biggest difference I have seen is balancing the spinner with the water bowl method. I'd certainly hire a balancer. Regards Rick G-RIKS

--> Europa-List message posted by: "Ami McFadyean" <ami@mcfadyean.freeserve.co.uk> Can't answer for the Club's moral conscience. Depends what overseas members get anyway. And why stunt growth of the utility of the Club by such a principle, which I think has been discussed before. Presumably as overseas clusters reach a certain critical mass then similar facilities would be offered from the locality of these. Anyway, its a mute point if the cost of the device is amortised over a certain period from hire charges, beyond which UK members would then be contributing further to Club funds. As regards rate of loan of other equipment, carb. balancers are available on pretty much every high street. Less so VSWR meters, which are far more common than vibration analysers. Thus, a crude extrapolation of your statistics on a "scarcity" versus "take-up" basis would suggest that 30 would be reached. That said, there are comparable devices in the pipeline that might be available later in the year at much lower cost. --> Europa-List message posted by: "William Mills" <combined.merchants@virgin.net> I am easy, Thruxton if you like, but there is a front coming down from the north tomorrow. As usual it all depends on timing. Perhaps we should go north towards the front so that we don't get cut off if it advances too quickly. If Barton is rough with lose material, we could choose Tatenhill. What do others think or should we get an update on the weather tomorrow morning? To this end, there's a web site with enormous detail on these antennas, and author sounds authoritative. He has developed a "meander line" antenna using foil tape. He claims similar performance, with the meander line seemingly favoring the low end of the band a bit. Mostly what it does is allow for a shorter antenna, placing tips further away from annoying metal elements. Antenna fans can browse: http://www.nancymoon.com/antennas.htm Regards, Fred F.
