I was considering using my iPAQ as a moving map and thought that a Bluetooth remote GPS unit would reduce the amount of wiring cluttering the cockpit and I could also use it in other, hired aircraft. But I was wondering whether the Bluetooth signal might interfere with other avionics. Any opinions gratefully received. ________________________________ Message 3 _____________________________________ Time: 09:41:12 AM PST US Subject: Re: Europa-List: Bluetooth GPS From: Gerry Holland MIME_QP_LONG_LINE --> Europa-List message posted by: Gerry Holland Rick Hi! Does anyone have any experience of Bluetooth GPS units? Yes. The Tom-Tom Unit is the one we have looked at and used. It is excellent and we have just ordered a iPaq 5550 with HP Bluetooth GPS from MicroWarehouse for a hopeless Navigator and member of staff! I was considering using my iPAQ as a moving map and thought that a Bluetooth remote GPS unitwould reduce the amount of wiring cluttering the cockpit and I could also use it in other, hired aircraft. I guess you will change GPS database as a Human Voice telling you when to turn left into Acacia Avenue may well aggravate. But I was wondering whether the Bluetooth signal might interfere with other avionics. Any opinions gratefully received. I'm not sure but I thought the Bluetooth Frequency was 2.4Ghz and it must be fairly low power as range is 30' max. As soon as we receive the Unit I=B9ll try and talk Paddy Clarke in G-KIMM to get airborne and test. Regards Gerry Gerry Holland Europa 384 G-FIZY Trigear with 912 and Arplast CS Prop. Works fine & GPS stays locked-on well. BT connection to the iPAQ is stable (once kick-started - a 2 minute exercise, but that's a Micro$oft fault with the BT drivers, apparently). The company website is: www.globalsat.com.tw/english/products.php & see a review of it here: www.pocketgps.co.uk/globalsat-bt308.php A comparison of most models is here: www.gpspassion.com/fr/articles.asp?id=55 with an updated article including 15 BT GPSs coming soon... I bought mine (new) on eBay for much less than RRP & it works fine with my iPAQ 5550 - battery lasts ~7 hrs, better than the iPAQ!! One thing I particularly liked was the interchangeable plug-pins on the charger (just slot in country-specific pins on to the transformer) which also works with the iPAQ; so only one charger to take on long trips away (don't forget the iPAQ power adaptor if you have a model newer than 37xx tho' -- been there, done that!!) I plan to do the same, and will be using pocketFMS, free downloadable software, really amazing. Look at www.pocketfms.com there is also some advice about the hardware. It's beta, and will be shareware. It gets the maps, metars and tafs, terrain elevation and nav data from the internet, a slow, but also free process. I've been playing with it so far without GPS, as flightplanner and really like it. I hope it will be as good as gps as well. Jos Okhuijsen kit #600 working on the 1st flap. I am able to secure the lap belt low and tight and there is no tendency for the shoulder straps to cause the lap belt to ride up as I have found on the standard issue Europa harness. I need to put a value on my kit and, as there is no one in NZ able to indepedently value a Europa, I need to get examples of current sell prices.
