I would like to know what is required lighting in U.S. for night VFR and later
possibly IFR. Is wing lighting with colored front, strobe center, and white at
rear of same fixture adequate? If not please give lights and specific locations.
I would like to keep wiring to rear of fuselage to a minimum. I intend to
run wing tip wiring through a conduit since this is a composite airframe Any other
thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

Fellow Europaphiles:
I'm in the process of installing the Europa Wiring Harness. The two
main cables from the battery have large bolts and nuts on the firewall
end. These bolts are supposed to pass through the firewall and, in
that way, provide +12v & ground/earth to both sides. Europa is quite
explicit about how far from the starboard side the bolts are to be
positioned. The +12v bolt is to be installed 5.5 inches from the
starboard side and the ground/earth bolt is to be installed 7.5 inches
from the starboard side. There is no instruction as to how far up the
firewall from the top of the passenger foot well they are to be placed.
Does anyone out there have the factory locations or a recommendation
for their placement?
Thanks, good building and happy flying,
Bob Borger

Oh yes, I do indeed have a recommendation, having found out the hard way.
Unless you are absolutely certain where everything else will be located on
either side of the firewall do not drill any holes for the wiring yet,
including those to mount the ground terminal strip. As in a few other
instances (such as the Europa fuel drain valve kit that puts the drains
under the specified location for the battery - gee, that was a clever one)
the factory ignores the possibility of a builder installing something not
included with the kit, so you must plan ahead.
Whether or not you follow the factory's recommendation check that the
firewall end of the harness will clear the instrument panel molding on the
starboard side. I ran the harness along the starboard side just under the
door sill and located the brass bolts just above the starboard footwell but
had to cut the panel molding for clearance. Since the bolts could not be
installed any lower on the firewall I don't see how cutting the molding
could have been avoided.
The harness is quite a bit longer than needed if the firewall pass through
bolts are located per the factory. I expect to cut the #4 cables shorter by
about 2 feet to avoid having an unnecessary loop at the battery. If you
elect to place the pass through bolts anywhere else keep in mind that the #4
cables forward of the firewall are rather short thus limiting your choice of
locations.

The basic rules for both VFR and IFR operations are explained in FAR 91.205;
the pertinent paragraphs are...
(c) Visual flight rules (night). For VFR flight at night, the following
instruments and equipment are required:
(1) Instruments and equipment specified in paragraph (b) of this section.
(2) Approved position lights.
(3) An approved aviation red or aviation white anticollision light system on
all U.S.-registered civil aircraft. Anticollision light systems initially
installed after August 11, 1971, on aircraft for which a type certificate
was issued or applied for before August 11, 1971, must at least meet the
anticollision light standards of part 23, 25, 27, or 29 of this chapter, as
applicable, that were in effect on August 10, 1971, except that the color
may be either aviation red or aviation white. In the event of failure of any
light of the anticollision light system, operations with the aircraft may be
continued to a stop where repairs or replacement can be made.
(4) If the aircraft is operated for hire, one electric landing light.
Of course, Item (4) does not apply to us.
Specifications for all lights are given in FAR 23.1381 through 23.1401 but
there is too much detail to include in this message. If you are a member of
AOPA you can get this and additional details at
http://www.aopa.org/members/files/fars/
...and before someone points out that our experimental aircraft don't need
to comply with the FARs for factory built aircraft, keep in mind that it
might be difficult to convince the FAA inspector to grant your airworthiness
certificate if you deviate too much from the rules for factory built
aircraft. Installing TSO'd lights seems the safest (in both senses).

Subject: | Transponder Testing |
--> Europa-List message posted by: MJKTuck@cs.com
Hi Folks,
I'm still trying to find a way of testing my transponder (and Mode C) without
having to pull the panel to take it into the radio shop and have them test
it.
Where are the definitions of what constitutes a 'test'? Obviously it's more
than just calling up ATC and asking them if they 'can see me' and have them
confirm your altitude (or is it?).
Does my repairman certificate allow me to do the testing?
How about fitting one of those ATD-300 Traffic Watch/Alerts
(www.monroyaero.com) which can tell you what your transponder is transmitting? This way you can
see if your transponder is sending out bum info (as it did for me before I
declared it U/S) before air traffic tells you, and also alert you of potential
traffic conflicts.
Any thoughts?
