Ron, I am running (now nearly 200hrs) with a PFA approved fuel system with a
single Andair minigascolator after the selector valve then 'T' ing to the
two pumps in parallel, then to engine. The Gascolator is mounted on one of
the baggage bay vertical support panels and has a small access panel below
it with quick release to allow access to the drain tap fitted in the
Gascolator bowl, which allows easy check for water, and to drop the bowl for
screen cleaning. It has worked without a hiccup. For the first few hours
there was a reasonable amount of gunge on the screen but this settled within
10 hrs, and since then it would not really have mattered to have left the
screen unchecked/unwashed for 50 hrs or more, (but I do filter my petrol on
its way into the tank). I also have a lo fuel pressure warning switch
(operating a light in front of my nose) between pumps and engine. This has
only ever come on when the main tank is running dry and it gives sufficient
warning to change over before things go quiet. David Joyce, Mono XS 914,

As far as q.3 goes. I tapped a 1/8" NPT hole through the 'plastic' of
the filler to take an elbow. Then made a slightly curved 'washer' from
4mm aluminium also tapped to 1/8"NPT which goes inside the filler. The
elbow can now be tightened hard into the filler giving a very good seal.
If you wish I can send you a photo off line.

I wasn't overly impressed with the fit of the access panel in the baggage bay
bulkhead nor the symmetry of the lower access panel holes. I kind of wish the
factory would have let the edge of the access panel "run wild" (leaving it
larger than it needs to be) and I would have sanded it to a tight fit. As mine
is, the edge of the access panel is inconsistent with the recessed opening in
the bulkhead. The gap varies between the edge of the access panel and the
recess in the bulkhead. My access panel was trimmed too much at the factory,
especially across the top. It's not a structural issue, but I suspect it will take
some bondo around the edges to make it look right. Probably not an issue for
those who are doing upholstery back there, but if you're painting the interior
like me variations in the gap between the cover and the bulkhead will make it
noticeable.
Much like your problem, it's an easy fix, but it's just one more thing in a
long list of things to do to get this bird in the air.

| Getting close to bonding in Cockpit Module, figure should sort out the

| Have a few questions. Will be using 914 on XS Monowheel.
| 1) Instead of using the supplied filters, has anyone used 2 Andair
Gasculator/Filters, one for each fuel pump? How many hours flight time, ever
have any clogging or flow problems because of the fine mesh?
Ron:
I took my stance from many hours on a T6 (Harvard) . The tanks hold
fuel from one flight to the next. To establish if water has develloped in
the staorage, we dripped the bottom of the tanks (water drains) - so I
installed the Europa mod water drains, one for each side. To find if water
has develloped in the rest of the system, we dripped the gascolator (Andair
if you wish) which was the last thing to serve the engine, thus catching any
in the lines - so I installed an Andair gascolator in the feed line.
The drains catch the water (mostly) and the gascolator catches water
plus solids in the cup. So the routine is to drip the drains before every
trip and then the gascolator. If you refuel enroute, the chances of the
drains collecting water in a hurry is more remote but the gacolator can be
dripped, or the cup emptied for foreign gas bits.
I am not ready to fly, but that's my plan anyway.
Cheers, Ferg
| 2) I am not too keen on having vent on the top of the fuse. Would like to
install on
| the bottom.
| A) What size vent line to use that pokes out the bottom of the fuse?
| B) What shape vent line, Straight with a 45 degree cut off facing into
the wind or
| a bent into the wind vent?
| C) How far below the fuse to let the vent stick out so it is not under
a vacuum?
| D) Has anyone run 2 vents instead of 1?
| E) What is a good location of vent on Mono?
|
| 3) As far as routing the vent lines, you need to go up and if plumbed into
the filler,
| it would act as a siphon break. What is a good way to somehow plumb into
the filler
| neck and get a good seal?

My thanks to who ever brought up the baggage
bay cover problem. I checked mine and the entire
cover, flange and all fit through the hole. I still had
the piece I cut out ( it pays to be a pack rat sometimes)
and put it back in place with 2 inch wide strips of bid.
Now I can start the cutout from square one.

Ron,
As for the fuel vent setup in the top of the filler tube, Spruce have a rubber
barb
washer that suits a 90 degree elbow. This washer with barb attached is a bugger
to install into the appropriate sized hole, but once installed, and the aluminium
elbow is pushed through, well it aint going anywhere! Also, it can be inspected
each time you refuel, to ensure you can still see the barbed portion of the elbow
sticking through the internal part of the rubber barbed washer. With this elbow
you
simply push on a nylon/rubber/whatever hose that suits you, and with it not
normally having fuel in it, albeit exposed to vapours, it should last forever.
Hope
this helps. Its in the Spruce catalogue, but I don't have one handy to be able
to
refer you.

Depending how old your kit is, you may also need the cut-out piece. In the
XS kit it contains 3 thicker disks to use as inspection hatch covers -- for
the fuel selector (stdb side of the tunnel) and the fuselage floor (under
the fuel tank outlets).
Never throw anything away ...

Thanks to all who replied. I wound up glassing the cutout back in and will
cut our after it drys. The underlying part of these kits (not in the build
book is......look and measure 3 times b-4 you cut once!

There will soon be a container with a Europa going to the Port of
Tauranga. If anyone wants extra Resin, Redux or large parts (or is
thinking of buying a Europa and wants to share shipping costs with this
new builder) then please contact me so that we can coordinate shipping.

Hi all,
Can some one suggest a US based mail order house that would sell 1/8 NTP taps. I can't find them in AC Spruce and the only other tool supplier that I use is http://www.use-enco.com/ and they don't seem to have them listed either.
Thanks, Paul
