--> Europa-List message posted by: "Pete Lawless" <pete@lawless.info> Graham Yes we will have to have mode S. For IFR flight the date is April 2005 and for VFR April 2008 (I believe). There was talk of everything that was airborne having to be equipped - even skydivers! There is still a lot of resistance to the idea, as it appears to be so late coming in that it may well be superseded by something else. Regards Pete ---

Unfortunately, I have never seen any of them on this List so I guess they are not aware of your coming. One chap I'm sure would make you welcome is Bob DeLissa who lives at Palm Beach a few kilometres North of Coolangatta. Give him a ring and if he is not available himself, I'm sure he will steer you in the right direction. Bob is good company and if you get nothing else out of him, you will most certainly get a laugh. --> Europa-List message posted by: "Kingsley Hurst" <hurstkr@growzone.com.au> All, I am at the stage where I have to decide whether or not to instal an electronic engine monitoring system and if so, which one. So far, I am favouring the electronic ones over the steam gauge types. After considering many options, it would appear the one which suits my needs and my budget the best would be the Stratomaster E2 manufactured by MGL Avionics in South Africa. Soooo, I am soliciting comments from anybody who may have installed same or who might know something about these units. Any advice received in this regard will be greatfully received. The E2 can be seen at http://www.lightflying.com.au/Stratomaster%20Manuals/E2%20Manual.pdf Kingsley Hurst Mono Classic 281 in Oz.

I think it would be great to have a lot of different aircraft in the various stages of construction to share ideas in the building process. Of course, my brother John's tri-gear will be there as well as my mono-motorglider. I'm sure that neither of ours will be flying yet. Although I sure wish they were! Maybe some of you folks that have your Europa's flying will share the experience with some of us want-a-be's? ; ) We should have plenty of room in the hangar for anyone who wants to display their project. This is gonna be fun, ya'll come!!! Doug Lawton Mathews Field Whitwell TN

Thanks John: Make both brackets that same as the illustration? It appears that I have one bracket that already has the needed clearance area cut out from the factory. From the illustration I can tell it is the port side. The other bracket sent is flat and I'm guessing that I need to cut out the half circle area. I find it unusual that the factory only finished one. I want to make sure that I do not have a mis- bagged part before I get to grinding. I wrote Neville. No word yet. Thanks for your help in the matter. Brian

--> Europa-List message posted by: "John & Amy Eckel" <eckel1@comcast.net> Brian, As I recall neither of my brackets were cut out, I had to do both. And yes, both W16's do have to be cut out as the illustration shows. As a precaution make sure you are not working on the mating part that is shown further back in the book in the area I mentioned in the last email. The parts are similar enough that they could be mixed up. --> Europa-List message posted by: "Kenneth Gresham" <kgresham@mtco.com> The 2 main wheel inner tubes came with 1chrome and 1 brass nut ana a chrome washer each. On one the brass nut and washer was tight against the tube with the other loose. On the other both nuts were in the stem with the washer between. What is the correct orientation and location of these parts? How does the valve stem lay inside the wheel? I see no drawings or description in the manual. This should be so easy, but I don't want to mess things up. Thanks. Ken Gresham A268 Wings rigged, doing flap extensions, and gear

My advice with avionics is not to jump too soon... try to wait and either a) the requirement will be postponed, or b) the big guys will start making equipment and so the price will fall. If you try and equip now, your kit will probably be outdated by the time the rules come into force. --> Europa-List message posted by: <kbcarpenter@comcast.net> I'll try to get there with my plane. Am currently flying with the glider wings after about 175 hours with the short wings. At this point, I felt better at ten hours in the short wings than I do at twenty hours in the glider wings. I miss the roll response of the short wings, and the long wings float and bounce more. Prob need to get the landing speed down more with the glider wings. The speed brakes are not close to the effectiveness of spoilers. My observations are >that I would have to substantially widen the wing rib holes and even then I >expect the push rod to be directly against the spar with unacceptable or no >clearance Brian - I found the only one I've done so far (starboard) needed a fair amount of fettling, but I didn't need to attack the spar at all. However, I found I _did_ need to remove almost all of the rib flange at one station, taking it back pretty much to the face of the spar. The geometry will change subtly depending on how far the rod-ends are screwed on, etc. It's a bit tedious putting it all together then taking it all out again to file the holes, but that seems to be the way to get satisfactory clearances. If it's as close as you say, maybe you need to check back with the factory. There are no spacers or similar between W11/W12 and the spar, so you haven't left anything out there! If the tightness is at the root end, then check again very carefully the assemblage of everything in the W16 area. Incidentally, referring back to your previous post, my manual says to file the W16 relief curves _before_ rivetting on the bellcrank bearing, so I assume you're now playing with the W16 that was already shaped. regards Rowland -- | Rowland Carson PFA #16532 <http://home.clara.net/rowil/aviation/> | 660 hours building Europa #435 G-ROWI e-mail <rowil@clara.net>

Subject: Re: <Rowland> Wing lateral push rod HELP!
--> Europa-List message posted by: EuropaXSA276@aol.com Hi again Rowland: How's things? I use your website often. Thank you! The push rod is binding at the two ribs closest to the bellcrank assembly < outrigger ribs for you mono men>. The fit is so tight that the rib would have to be completely removed up to the spar. My guess is that the rod will surly rub against the spar even with the holes widened that much. I'm thinking the only way out of this mess is to put a spacer behind the Bellcrank assembly as previously posted. NO way am I going to do a thing to that spar. Today I went ahead and filed away at my other W16 that did not have the relief curve shaped at the factory. It looks fine and I'll rivet the bearings today. Install tomorrow evening. I do not know why the factory sent one pre shaped and one not... But the problem is solved. Johns post brought to my attention that I could have been looking at a CS15 fuselage connector and not a W16 due to similar appearances. I spent the better part of today rummaging through boxes of bits attempting to locate CS15's to be sure what I thought to be a W16 was not miss bagged. After 2 hours in the hunt I realized the CS15s have already been installed at the factory on my quick build cockpit module... Cant wait to get out of chapter 8 Thanks for you help Rowland! Brian Skelly Do not archive This is just a bunch of dribble from a Texan who is attempting to build a machine that is more intelligent than he.....

Subject: XS Trigear rudder cable alignment
--> Europa-List message posted by: TELEDYNMCS@aol.com Greetings all, In an effort to get everything done before the top goes on I've been looking at the rudder cable alignment. The manual calls for fairleads to be installed in the rear bulkhead 1 3/8" left and right of the centerline and the same distance from the floor as measured at the centerline. It also calls for the starboard rudder cable to exit 13" from the horn, which is essentially at the hinge line. This alignment appears to make the rudder cable change course at the bulkhead by about 15 degrees to starboard. Is this correct? I plan to use nylon fairleads to reduce friction, but will I have a binding problem? Regards, John Lawton Dunlap, TN A-245 (wiring, sanding, eyeballing, head scratching in prep for bonding on the lid)

As best I can research, I can't locate any FAA plans to mandate Mode-S for VFR in the U.S, and the IFR date will probably slip a few years. Appears a European thing for VFR. Regards, Fred F.
