I'd also really appreciate having this online - but can we have it in

The latest, combined mono and trygear, build manual is available on the Club
CD and is 12Mbytes.
This was produced for us by the factory and we would want to seek their
permission to put it on line.
Due to the need for updates they may prefer it on there own site.

You may have spotted the most probably reason for "pin slop". I've seen
quite a few Europas with excessive elevator looseness, where the builder
says he was careful (not met a lady builder yet :-( )
The trouble is that an almost imperceptible amount of movement at the pin
soon multiplies up to 1/2 inch at the trailing edge. The vibration of
taxying over lumpy ground cause hammering at the holes and it starts to get
worse quite quickly.

Great Rob,
But the manual is not exactly public domain, it is inherently
copyrighted. I can not allow copyrighted material on the server.
However, i have asked the factory for permission. Let's hang on for the
answer please.

You're absolutely right. I typed without thinking. Been working 12 hour days

Thanks again,

Hi All,
I've been spending most of my time working on my bird, and less reading the
list lately, so I'm running about 2 weeks behind on reading the posts on the
forum. This RF stuff is right down my alley (I do cellular, PCS and microwave RF
testing for a living) so here goes.
Roughly 96% of the radiated energy is dissipated in the first two wavelengths
distance from the antenna. Couple that with the fact that your body is about
72% water which results in "skin effect", the phenomena that makes the radio
waves pass around your body, not through it. Therefore, consider a few inches a
safe distance from transponder antennae. Skin effect is the same reason why
cell phones DO NOT cause cancer. Remember, it takes 600-1000 watts of highly
concentrated microwave RF energy to pop your popcorn or thaw out that chicken
for dinner, so 200 watts of highly dispersed RF isn't going to do diddly to your
DNA. What you do not want to do is spend a lot of time looking at the antenna
up close when it is transmitting. RF can damage your retinas.
In regards to transponder antennae and placement, I'm using the Advanced
Aircraft Electronics transponder antenna mounted on the right side of the fuselage
(vertically polarized) about 14" in front of the rear bulkhead.
I've tested this arrangement using an Anritsu-Wiltron 251S Sweep Generator
with RG-58C/U and RG-400 at 1090Mhz and the cable loss difference between the
two was negligible at this frequency. Keep in mind this is a serious piece of
test gear, not a $50 SWR meter from Radio Shack, so I'm confident and pleased
with the results. The aggregate SWR for this antenna, with good quality RG 58C/U
is running about 1.3 and the return loss for the coax, using a precision 50
ohm load at the antenna end, is in the dirt too. There is also no apparent
interference problem from any of the metalic objects (pitch push rod, counter
balance, etc) in the vacinity of the antenna. I'm installing the Garmin 320A
transponder. It puts out something on the order of 250 watts when transmitting.
I've not done any field strength testing, but with the numbers I'm seeing in my
testing I think ATC will "see" me just fine.
I also have an MFJ-259B for COM testing, kind of Mickey Mouse compared to the
Wiltron, but it works. I'm installing an Advanced Aircraft Electronics COM
antenna mounted on the tailpost, vertically polarized. Using RG-58CU and Amp
connectors I have an average aggregate SWR of 1.4 across the COM band. The return
loss for the coax is kind of high at 4.8 dB, so I might be looking at some
other coax for the COM feed line.
The bottom line here is this, if you want good performance from your radios
use good quality coax and good quality connectors and install them properly.
Use connectors that have SOLDERED center pins, not crimp on ones. The crimp on
center pins might work fine now, but they will corrode over time and degrade
your transmit and receive performance. The connector should also crimp tightly
onto the shield. Use the right tool for the job, not a pair of pliars! Don't
use clamp on type connectors unless you want trouble down the road, either.
Scratch Radio Shack off your list of vendors for either of these parts.
BTW, if anybody wants their antenna system(s) checked, I'll have all my test
gear available at our fly-in in June. I can test anything from 25 Mhz to 3.3
Ghz.

The epoxy that we are using has zero odor and has been easy to live with.
My understanding is that the supplied epoxy/resin in Europe has a very
strong "aroma". So far, ventilation has not been a problem.

Ventilation is important but not because of any noxious odors. Aeropoxy and
Araldite do give off an odor but it is not so strong that it would be
noticed beyond arm's length from the source. What is a very real concern is
how you (and others in the house) are affected by a possible allergic
reaction to the epoxy resin, both as a liquid prior to cure and as dust from
grinding and sanding after cure. Some people are unaffected and others must
resort to rather extreme measures to avoid breaking out in a rash. I have
developed an annoying, but not extreme, sensitivity that has progressively
worsened with exposure, but I can mitigate the problem by working only with
good ventilation and by breathing through an activated charcoal respirator.
It took me a while to recognize that it is not only contact with resin or
dust that causes a rash. For me, breathing the vapor or dust is sufficient
to trigger a reaction.
Because you can not know in advance (unless you have already experienced an
allergic reaction to other epoxies) whether you will be sensitive to the
epoxy used in the kit you MUST assume that you are allergic and take the
necessary precautions to avoid direct skin contact with any of the epoxies
used in construction, and to use a respirator when working with uncured
epoxy or when sanding any epoxy surfaces. It would be prudent to provide
sufficient ventilation in your basement shop and to isolate you shop (a
closed door should suffice) in order to keep the fumes and dust from
escaping into your living quarters.
Best regards,
Rob Housman

In my garage shop I have a 12" fan vent through the roof, sucking air out of
the shop. I can leave the door to the house open, letting "room temperature"
air in to the shop, which is great both winter and summer. No problem with
dust or odors going into the house.
If you can get an exhaust fan to suck air out of your basement, you should
be a happy builder.
Kevin, filling and sanding the completed airframe.

Hi John Lawton.....
Wow, that is nice test gear. It will be very nice of you to test
our antenna's. I used Bob Kuckols SWR meter he "rents" out. I use the
Europa vertical dipole in the fin.. Accordingly I got a fairly nice swr
of 1.2 to 1.4 (if memory seves me well) and the usual dip which I trimmed
for the best swr around 126 mhz. So, I guess we'll bring our screw
drivers to get in and check it out.
Just ran a route on my gps and found it to be about 495 nm to
your place. We will have one refueling stop on the way in Ga.
Depending on winds we will try to do approx. 120K ground speed. Depends
on each of our fuel consumption. It will be nice to compare the three of
us. One mono, one tri gear and one conventional gear. I hope the WX
will cooperate for the flight.
I assume there are accomodations close by. What are the times
for the get together?? Details, details, details....... Fuel: mogas?
or avgas? Should we refuel at the Co. airport just south of you?j

Hi! David.
I built my MK I Europa in my centrally heated double garage which links
directly to my rear entrance and utility room with no problems, although I
did paint a damp proof membrane on the floor to help manage the humidity
factors.
For extraction I had a 9" Xpelair mounted in a window pane. You haven't said
if your purchase is an early foam winged a/c or the latest "airfix" type
wings? The earlier type had lots of sanding needed which was likely to
tramp the dust into the house.

Yes, I'll be curious to see how the fuel consumption turns out! Usually,
around here that time of year we tend to have the scattered "popcorn" late
afternoon t-storms. Usually easy to see and steer around.
> I assume there are accommodations close by.
Yes, there are a number of motels and eateries close by. No Hilton's or
Marriotts, but clean, modest accommodations are 5-7 miles from the field. I can
give you numbers and descriptions of the local motels if you'd like. Doug is
supposed to have his mini-van available as an airport shuttle. Also, I've got a
Pathfinder and Doug and I both drive F-250 Crew Cabs, so we'll be able to
shuttle those who don't camp at the field.
What are the times > for the get together??
We're winging it. Since we operate a glider club out of the field, good
weather means we'll be towing all day from about noon on. At this point I can say
we'll certainly do a cookout Saturday evening, maybe even home made ice cream.
Perhaps we'll meet for Sunday breakfast somewhere. Suggestions?

Marion County Airport, (APT) about 16 NM SW does have fuel. If you'd like to
see the length of the Sequatchie Valley, Crossville (CSV) has the cheapest
fuel around. I can also give you the Lat and Long of a couple of nice waterfalls
along the way. Last time I checked CSV's 100LL was about $2.15/gal. when
everybody else was running about $2.40 - $2.50/gal. Their sectionals are cheap
too.
