The room WAS 23x23ft until I added a bathroom in one corner. [2] While it is dubbed a 'spare bedroom', it was added to the house when I retired and fell underfoot - so needed a 'hobby. It was designed and built as a 'granny-flat' as my mum was approaching her ninetieth. Unfortunately, a broken hip led to her demise. The room can actually be divided into small kitchen, livingroom and corner bedroom, but hasn't been yet - our wheelchair refuge of the future. [3] I built it (except the basement/foundation), and it has been "the Royal Apartments" for early visitors and it added about 40% to my taxes. Jenny thinks I designed it in 1990 for the Europa (a happenstance) and I've never tried to convince her otherwise. A bubble to burst. [4] Our 'master' bedroom is one third the area. [5] Advancing the value of one's home here is tax-free (no capital gain) and we pay taxes on the payments instead - so guess where investment goes? I'm not entirely familiar with UK standards but I hope this eases the envy quotient a bit..........actually a lot. I really was trying to indicate the minimum area for assembly......... it stilll isn't easy and requires a wide door off the starboard wingtip, since I can't sand, scrape, paint or disassemble the machine from November to April. Cheers, Ferg ________________________________ Message 3 _____________________________________ Time: 12:00:32 PM PST US From: "William Mills" Subject: Re: Europa-List: Drop of a Hat Fly-ins --> Europa-List message posted by: "William Mills" Hi Hat-droppers, Tomorrow looks OK weatherwise and the best appears to be in the south west, so I am planning to visit Bodmin. Rick Morris is also going to try to make it, so if any other Hat-droppers would like to come, aim to arrive for 12 noon or there abouts. A friend once put a large capacity spring pull scale between my Challenger ultralight and a fixed object to check the amount of thrust before first flight. Don't recall what the figure was but it was apparently enough with the 52 horse Rotax. Paul, Below is a copy of Andy Draper's posting to the list with repect to this topic on 29.11.02 in reply to Dave Anderson with his 914. (Quote:) Starting from cold should be done with full choke and closed throttle. After start, adjust the throttle (still with full choke) to give 2500rpm, then after 20 - 30 seconds, close the choke quickly. The rpm will drop down to about 2000 rpm, so adjust it back up to 2500 for warm up. Hope that this helps. regards Andy (End quote) Must be getting exciting now Hey? I used a convenient tie down ring at the airport which happened to be a bent over re-bar in a concrete slug in the ground. This worked very well. I ran it up to full rpm for five minutes. This is more than enough for you to take off and get to a decent altitude while you fly around the airport in a circle. We just notified the other aircraft we were doing a first flight and would be in the pattern at about 1500 to 2000'. This way we could always do a dead stick landing of necessary up wind or down wind. After about 20 minutes in the pattern, first landing and shut down for a check out and then back into the air----------- What a lovely time for a video camera to show what many years of hard work (but fun) can do....... Lots of room and it doesn't cost and arm and a leg. Not living upon your neighbor has its advantages. When I can look into my neighbors home and see what he's doing I'm to damn close. Ready to retire (4 years) and move to Tenn. where I have 7+ acres of woods and open areas. Room to wander in PEACE and QUIET. No sirens, no big diesel trucks, or busses running down the street. No friggin motorcycles with out a muffler. Just an occasional pickup pulling a trailer with hay on it. 10 miles to town on nice paved blacktop roads. Grass strip thats private about a mile away. Hope to get to be good friends with him soon. BTW the garage is 30' x 30' more than half the size of the house. Its something I never thought I'd get to, but life has many twists. Some nice and some not so nice. Take it as it comes, make lemon aid from a lemon as my grandmother use to say. Sun-N-Fun is just a few weeks away so I guess I'll go for a day or two. Getting to expensive for more than that. Flying my Europa is great fun, its a great aircraft. Well worth the wait of building. Parigoris" Subject: Re: Europa-List: 914 Staring tips --> Europa-List message posted by: "Ronald J. Parigoris" Hello Paul "I find mine difficult to start when cold. Warm starts are instant." If you are using mogas and have been flying a while, you may want to check for "Carb Snot". I plan on using a 914 but have no Rotax experience. I have a 1988 BMW R-100GS that uses the same carbs, and the first thing to give me trouble is hard cold starts. The enriching circuit seems susceptible to first get clogged. Every few years needs cleaning out even though i use stabil and always leave tank full. A few times on trips it got plenty cold out and the bike would not start, even though in less than plenty cold it started just fine. I can pull an intake tube off and give it a good old fashion hand choking and it usual cranks right up if i am in a hurry, or just pull the carbs and clean out. I did read on the Rotax 914 service bulletin for extreme cold you may want to do some hocus pokus to make cold starts easier, but when temp rises you need to switch back. For the most part the yellowish "Snot" seems to develop in the enriching circuit passages that are on the removable float bowl. It is good practice to always replace the float bowl gaskets. If you don't they seem to seep/weep just enough to stain the bowl and perhaps your shoes. Probably worst on the bike than the europa. On the bike don't ever run as high a % of power for anywhere near as long as the 914 will. Thus i never saw a detectable leanness, but just a bit of "Snot" is usual found elsewhere, where it could cause lean at high power settings. The engine fires and stops the rotation dead. This can happen several times before it starts. I can't remember having this problem last winter or the one before that. Has any one else experienced this, because I am sure it can't be doing the engine, or mount, much good. Otherwise, when running it seems to be functioning well. Warm starts are without choke are OK. Can the timing slip on a 912? Any advice welcome. Regards, William
