After bursting the Rotax 912S into life it appears I may have a damaged port water
coolant radiator. I small leak.
Does any builder out there have a port radiator (Monowheel Classic) that I can
buy, and for that matter, a starboard one if they want to get rid of both. I am
off to Londontown this Saturday via LAX so easy to pick up.

Dear Tim,
These radiators are still available through the factory if you are unable to find
second hand ones. Please refer to the catalogue.

If you live in an area where this fungus may pose a problem you should
be able to get it from your fuel supplier.
It is so long ago I last saw the product I dont remember the name but
it is a fungicide and comes with elaborate mixing instructions- some
have a contraption to allow the application directly in the refuel hose.
I know this fungus lives on jet fuel, but not if it is the same that may
live in gasoline/petrol...
Hope it helps somehow,
Alex

If this arrangement is permanent, it means weight, To those of the "few ounces
here, few ounces there, and pretty soon..." frame-of-mind, consider something
temporary. For this purpose, I squirreled away styrofoam "peanuts" in heavy-duty
trash bags. I place them back there, then lay a couch cushion on top. Main
idea is just to prevent any significant pressure on the big pitch tube.

Paul,
I worked out the position from pictures and advice from the factory then
cut the holes to suit the bit which ends up flush with the outer skin.
Positioned them in the holes with runny flox and laid up two bid layers
round the edges inside to fix them.
I asked a similar question before doing this and had several members who
advised me not to fit them but to look for alternative ventilation. I
did fit them but the threaded peg on which the 'nut' turns on both sides
has broken and had to be fixed. If doing it again I would probably look
for something else. I feel they are a poor design.

Hey, team:
I realise now that the discussion centres around the "NACA" ducts
sold by someone (ASpruce?mebbe) and used by many in the Europa. I humbly
suggest a look at those designed from the originals - which were used as
engine intakes for the F93 (hardnosed Sabre) version of the oldF86. these
were a good size naturally and worked a treat, so the rumour that they're no
good is strictly applicable to the commercialk version, not the original.
The ones I';ve seen violate the general rules for ratio of width to
length and cannot be as efficient as those drawn by Rutan and most
efficient. A copy of the design (and relative station dimensions is on tap
at John Cliff's site,
http://www.crixbinfield.freeserve.co.uk/europa.htm , under I think
"miscellaneous" items. You can design and build any size any shape within
the 'rules' that Rutan laid down in his training book.
Don't GIVE UP THE SHIP!

Graham,
Correct me if I am wrong but from what I remember reading many moons ago
(probably about 325 ago) in an 'Aviation Safety Digest', I think the
fungus phenomenon might only apply to jet fuel.

From http://www.conidia.com/hormonconis_resinae.html we get:
Micro organisms can grow in certain fuels by using the alkanes in the fuel as a
foodstuff. In some cases, they may be able to utilise some of the additives in
the fuel. Mid to light distillate fuels are particularly susceptible to contamination
by micro-organisms, although more recently there are increasing reports
of gasoline being affected, particularly some of the more "environmentally
friendly" products.
Search Googls on fungus in fuel and get lots of interesting reading...

Ferg,
Actually I think he is talking about a 2 x 4 across the fuselage
(side to side). I did the same but used a 1 x 4 on each side. Then a 1
x 12 as the belly board to slide in and out. Yes I had to do it several
times so be prepared. Also, do EVERYTHING you can possible do BEFORE
you put the top on. It makes things so much easier. Do all the wiring
and anything else. Then put the top on.

Yes I did mean a 2x4 upright edgewise across the fuse. But I am only
reduxing in a "joist hanger" so there will be no 2x4 in the fuse unless I
need it. The joist hangers (metal) are open at the top. I've redux'ed them
to the side wall and will apply several layers of bid around it to
strenthgen it so it holds when I place a 2x4 across it. Bye the way I just
recieved my nosewheel fork and will be finally installing the nose wheel so
it can finally roll free.

Cheers,
I replied to similar over another thread. the duct itself is a
proven design, and I copied mine from a Rutan drawing of the original. It
became a 10"x3" inlet and works even at slow speeds (automobile test). The
inlet at that size feeds a sympathetic 2" duct exactly. I made mine from a
Cedar plug which takes wax very well and will produce several copies very
easily - then make a 3"x1" recangular to 2" diameter circular cross-section
to fit the ducting. Produces a very strong current of air which can be
throttled or otherwise controlled for cockpit hot/cold.

Due to a ground handling boo boo I got an ouch on one of my warp drive blades.
I roughed up the trailing edge of one of the blade tips. As a consequence about

with some sandpaper. The question now is : Is this significant? Do I make
the other blades look like this? Do I not worry about it till I balance the

James,
Actually I was being fascetious as hell. More later.
Thank you for the plan to live inside the @#$%
fuselage. I
remember Tony k commenting on the extreme discomfort. My comment produced a
bright idea from one of the guys who filled a couple of doubled trash bags
with those expanded worms they use for shipping, and then laid a cushion
over top - giving great comfort - so will ape that.
My original response was a snotty attempt at humour - drawing
the difference between lie-lay-lain and lay-laid-laid, grammar that seems to
escaped most in the last twenty years. Perhaps a second scan of the message
might amuse.......
Perhaps not.
Guilty as charged.
Ferg
PS Thanks for the trouble..............

| Ferg,
| Actually I think he is talking about a 2 x 4 across the fuselage
| (side to side). I did the same but used a 1 x 4 on each side. Then a 1
| x 12 as the belly board to slide in and out. Yes I had to do it several
| times so be prepared. Also, do EVERYTHING you can possible do BEFORE
| you put the top on. It makes things so much easier. Do all the wiring
| and anything else. Then put the top on.

| ...though eagerly anticipated....:-p
|
| Paul McAllister told me how to find y'all. I know you weren't hiding, but
| I've been in no shape to actually *look*, so my apologies for taking so
long
| to get here.
|
| Long story short: N8690E is back to getting built - the top will be bonded
| on soon (thanks to the lads at Flightcrafters) and I'm rounding up the
parts
| for the instrument panel. In fact, the Rocky Mountain microEncoder and
| microMonitor kits are in my front room right now. Once I get a few
inflamed
| vertebrae healed (yes, it's always something), the soldering will
commence.
|
| The website is still up, though not much by way of updates just yet:

|
| I have another website that's of a purely commercial nature; feel free to
| email me at Admin@protacglobal.com for details, I shan't advertise it
here.

Keep kickin', Steve!

Hang in there Steve. altho I don't have an answer on the warp drive blade i do
know about burnout...that's where it's such a great asset to have builder's help
almost next door to you (Phoenix Composites). Don't hesitate to call on them...they
can do as little or as much as you like at a very low cost... I never
would of finished without them

Due to a ground handling boo boo I got an ouch on one of my warp drive blades.
I roughed up the trailing edge of one of the blade tips. As a consequence about
a 1/4" x 3/8" of that corner is now gone. I dresesed it and smoothed it with
some sandpaper. The question now is : Is this significant? Do I make the other
blades look like this? Do I not worry about it till I balance the prop and take
care of it with prop hub weights?
