--> Europa-List message posted by: "ivor.phillips" <ivor.phillips@ntlworld.com> Hi Tony that's interesting about the use of Automatic transmission fluid in the Tri-Gear Mastercylinder, (MOD 65 only) Matco has indorsed the use of ATF in there brake calipers so the choice of fluid has now doubled, and given Silicone DOT5 has a number Of drawbacks, It will be ATF for me! Not least the cost factor, 1 Litre of ATF costs 1 Pound sterling 1 Litre DOT5 SILICONE 25 pound sterling, (NO CONTEST) DOT 5 will work fine but DOT5.1 contains glycol and is not compatible with the seals. Petroleum based automatic transmission fluid (ATF) will also work fine. George R. Happ MATCO mfg . The master cylinder is model no. > US2002X. The seals are Buna N seals, compatible with Dot 3,5,8 , ATF > fluid?? and therefore most synthetic fluids. You need a very small vent on the reservoir to allow the fluid to lower as the pads wear, this way you always have a full pedal/lever, otherwise with time the starting point of the pedal?lever will move, Ivor Phillips XS486 London UK CM Installed, working on rudder cables, trial fit top and wings

Having re bled several times I have found that the lever returns to the off position quite smartly immediately after bleeding but a day or so later the old problem has returned. So I have come to the conclusion that my seals are damaged. Probably my fault for not following the advice about not operating the lever without fluid in the system :-( . Anyway I assume that either the factory or Aircrft Spruce can supply seals when I eventually get around to replacing them. BTW I am not flying yet and it is a job high on the list to be done before I do. --> Europa-List message posted by: "Brian Davies" <bdavies@dircon.co.uk> Nigel, Your modified diagram appears to require yet another 5amp circuit breaker to protect the positive feed to the relay. Surely it is sufficient to take the relay positive feed from the same place as the positive feed for the crowbar unit. The only difference is that the relay is energised when the alternator master switch is closed. Modifying the circuit from the old to the new then becomes a simple matter of moving the positive wires for the crowbar unit and the relay to the busbar side of the relay contacts. Does that make sense? It would be very difficult to fly accurately with them but as back up instruments they are good enough. Winter make some very nice ones but they have have a very nice price too. The reason is fear (valid or not) that after setting my hydraulic parking brakes, heat from the disc transfers to the cylinder, heats the fluid and expands it. And by softening the plastic tubing, pushes it a bit out of its connector each cycle, to someday pop on brake application. All I know for sure is this heat phenomenon is real, as on the other plane it causes the mechanical parking brake arrangement to lock up solid, so you have to invert your body to go down behind the rudders pedals to release them, looking like a dork on a busy airport ramp. The first certificated, production A/C I see with plastic brake lines might modify my thinking here! Or automobile for that matter. Regards, Fred F.

    Subject: Hydraulic Line Advice???
--> Europa-List message posted by: "Rob Housman" <RobH@hyperion-ef.com> It was an automotive application of plastic hydraulic lines (Lotus Elan, the original not the later one with a reliable Japanese-built engine) that convinced me to fit my Tri-Gear with stainless steel tubing outside the fuselage and brass inside. Lotus routed the hydraulic clutch line close to the exhaust and when that line ruptured, the ensuing fire nearly destroyed the car. The other lesson learned was that a chemical fire extinguisher (used by the professionals that arrived at the site in a large red truck) can surely make a mess of the electrical components. Let's hope that Halon remains available for aircraft use. It was quite a chore for this novice tube bender to fabricate the metal lines (especially since I also added brakes on the starboard side) but it eliminated the unlikely but possible failure of plastic tubing. I ordered my gear legs through Bob Berube at Flightcrafters and had it "bullet drilled" internal to he legs. I attach my aluminum tubing to the top center of the gear leg (which will be enclosed in fiberglass) then run a simple short flexible hose from each bottom side of the gear leg to the wheel cylinder. Biggest change I made was to put a moulding in the bottom of the lower cowl to provide a smooth passage of air into the coolers and more importantly at the rear of the coolers where the hot air goes out. On any cooling system it is most important that the air can flow smoothly, especially out.
