Paul, I had high temps on my 914, and in particular problems if prolonged
taxying was necessary. I plugged the gaps between the two radiators and the
air ducting and things improved, (probably helped by the passage of time and
the engine wearing off the rough bits). For the gap below the radiator I
stuck a sloping fillet of blue foam across the lower cowling and laid two
plies of bid over it, and for the other I filled the top gap with stainless
steel sheet, thus encouraging all the cooling air to go through both
radiators. Temps now seem happy in the worst of English summers, although I
don't blast around the sky at 115% all the time! Regards, David Joyce,

I'd like to suggest that perhaps the factory should supply only a single "dose"
of Redux with the kit - one bottle of hardener and one can of yellow goo. Then,
coupons for the remaining Redux. That way, a slow builder won't have to buy
several very expensive cans of the stuff, but can get fresh product when it will
be needed.

I am sure the Jabiru is a wonderful engine. Fact is the Rotax doesn't need a ring
job. I have flown Katanas with 3000 hours on the clock without overhaul, and
this at aflying school, where engine and airframe get a real hammering.

where you are lightening the load and get a rough run due to mixture. Whilst
in the climb you may have the carbs delivering more fuel that the engine can
develop power for , so when you throttle back the mixture leans off too far
giving a rough run.
Just a suggestion, perhaps some carb tuning specialist would care to put his
remarks to this theory.?

Following my report of rough running of my 912S last week, I flew with
my inspector today to try to replicate the conditions in which the rough
running occurs.
It seems to happen at the top of a climb, when the aircraft is levelled
off, speed builds to cruise then I back off the throttle. At this point,
the engine 'plucks' for a minute or so then smoothes off. I have a C.S.
prop and if I keep the manifold pressure towards the top end of it's
range, say 25in. the plucking continues until I back off the throttle
and reduce the pressure.
The day was rather cool and humid, the windows kept steaming up even
with the vents open. Is this likely to be carb icing or does anyone with
rather more experience than me have any other idea's?

Spare a thought for those of us downunder where the cost of getting an
additional pack of redux by itself is over USD500 by the time the
hazardous shipping costs are included. It's now normal procedure here to
wait until someone buys a kit and include spare redux in the container.

That'd be Gordon Taylor, in A241 N4041F, which first flew 3rd March.
Don't have a pilot or prop details for it though. But Dwight, who he?

Sorry - but I have to get this off my chest before I go another step.
CAUTION - it is a ranting.
I discovered that Kodak (amongst others) seems to have standardized on its
35mm film containers. I often wondered what to do with them when finished -
and discovered that so did most of the local photo shops. I was building my
workshop at the time and wanted a suction duct for sawdust control to circle
to room to a large mobile vacuum bin.
WELL, it turns out that both Kodak and the vacuum company had centred on
1-1/4 inches for a handy diameter on which to standardize their functions -
Kodak OD and vacuum OD and ID............ So I strung a 3-inch duct around
the walls and drilled 1-1/4inch holes where machines would demand the vacuum
when in use. When not used, I plugged the local holes with Kodak cylinders.
AH, but then every time I ran into "1-1/4 inches" as a measurement, Mr.
Eastman sprang to mind - and it's surprising what developed....... For
instance, the flap actuating rod protruding from the fuselage through slots
is exactly that diameter, so I'm using the Kodaks to position and plug the
holes I drill. As a corollary, I use the 35mm tubs for mixing bowls in any
under 25 gram mixes, let alone storing precious parts and long lengths of
rolled-up 2" BiD bits for future glassing projects. The usual 35mm bin will
just hold 55 inches of same - the length of a one-meter glass roll at 45
degrees cut.
WHAT is intriguing is: The local shops will gladly fill your shopping bag
with the little b****rs so there's no problem finding them NOW. ........
because photo shops are going digital, but soon folks will stop making 35mm
film in favour of electronic finishing (my guess) and there go the little
bins...........

That kit is real nice and big. It is the only flying Europa kit that we know
of.
Bob Jacobsen, N165BB "Beep Beep" (the Road Runner) owner of Galaxy Hobby
where I work(?) sometimes, will have this kit in stock when it becomes
available. He has three kit of other experimental now.
I have ask him for the second one he gets (guess who will be taking the
first). If others are interested, just ask.

If any of you have to return the blades to NZ then you should discuss
getting the import GST (12.5%) billed to Airmaster before you send it
back. NZ GST registered companied can as they can claim all of that cost
back from the government to leave the transaction GST neutral.
If you pick up the GST cost then there is no way you can claim it back.

Now that my Europa is out of its cradle and on its own legs retracting the gear
is not as simple any more. I was wondering what the best practices are out
there. My current thinking is to make up some saw horses with the top sloping
equal to the wing dihedral and placing them right under the spars. Padded of
course.

Be careful doing this. I ended up with some "dents" in the under side of my
wings. I think that might have been where they came from. I did a sloppy
job of padding my sawhorses. (used blue foam)

Paul,
I have just done the undercarriage test for our authorities (NZCAA) and I
did it the way the company suggested. I put a sawhorse, limited to750kg
weight, under each spar orientated along the spar with cushions to protect
the wing. Make sure you tie the tailwheel down because as you jack the
aircraft up from under the U/C arm the tailwheel lifted as well. ( I my
case.)
I also did it by suspending the aircraft from a beam and with a block and
tackle connected to the engine/U/C frame before the engine was mounted.
Finally, I did do it the way you suggest, without the weight of the engine,
with sawhorses on each side of the engine frame and using blue foam carved
to fit nicely against the curvature.
If you have a company trailer, then that I have found ideal to work on
aircraft (with the wings off the trailer) and putting added supports between
the wing support uprights and the aircraft to help hold it in place.(foam
rubber)

Finally got a chance to post a couple of photos. Surprisingly easy to do. Learning

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to post to the Gallery. We now
have
2020 photos on the site; some inspirational, some sad, like tonyp's A184
(but
will have a happy ending), some with pets standing in wings, (I'm guilty
of
one of those). But we can learn something from just about every one.
We currently have 90 registered users; most have permissions set to add
photos to the Gallery. If you want to add photos to the Gallery but can't,
or have
trouble, PM me on the site or post your questions on one of the forums.
The Forums are also setup for posting off topic. Have a funny family picture,
want to know if someone knows anything about custom cars, where to get a
$2800.00 paintball marker, (yes, the number's right), or just about anything
at
all, go ahead and post it.
If you'd like, I can setup a Forum for the abandoned wives and husbands of
builders, to get to know each other.
