>I want to put in an external power connection (piper style) that I found at
S n F. Reason being, If I ever get caught out somewhere and temporarily run
down the battery for a poor starting technique or some other reason, it will
be a little tricky to get the cowling back on after start. ;) For those of
you that have installed a ground power plug, where is the ideal place to
locate it? I was thinking about stealing one fine gentleman's idea that
lives in Tampa, but hate to run that much copper from the RH footwell to
behind the pilots seat. It may be the only safe place though. Any thoughts
and suggestions. <
I initially considered using the Piper type external power connector but
changed my plans when I realised how heavy and over engineered it was for a
Europa. Although a standard type connector allows use of existing ground
power sets a lead would still need to be carried if a battery jump start was
required. The combined weight of the Piper plug and socket seemed excessive
so I looked around for a lighter more portable alternative. I found that a
moulded plug and lead (originally used for USA washing machines - available
in Sears or Home Depot) proved to be ideal. I also bought a socket and a
pair of 50A crocodile clips. The socket was positioned just
aft of the flap slot aperture and uses the aircraft skin to make a small
access door. The centre pin of the plug (connected to the live pin) provides
a return path through the socket to power a ground power light on the
instrument panel. The lead can be rolled up small enough to fit inside one
of the underseat lockers when not in use. I also made up a second lead to
connect to a battery mounted on a small trolley for external power starts at
my home airfield. This is kept charged using a solar panel.
Running 4 gauge wire aft from the engine compartment creates a small weight
penalty (<2lb) if the battery is forward mounted. This is easily achieved
using oval plastic electrical ducting (4 gauge wire is an exact sliding fit
allowing end feeding after installation. The ducting is held in place by
'bid' layups. If the ducting is routed just below door frame level the
layups also reinforce the lower door frame (essential to prevent the frame
flexing during entry and exit).

All,
I am wondering if anyone can enlighten me as to what ideas they have come up
with for sanding filler on compound curves and for the inside radius on wing
fairings etc.

I used a standard U.K. forklift charger plug and socket.
If one buys 2 sets a HD car jump start lead can be split and used for both
car starting and Europa jump starts. No need for relays just hard wire it to
the battery.

Kingsley,
There are probably better suggestions but:
I made up 'pillows' of cut foam, [garbage bags loosely fitted with small
blocks of foam bought at local foam shop] , made to size and then casually
wrapped wityh the applicable grit paper. They appear to accept the size of
curve withoput being aggressive yet pliable and insistent.
Hope it helps.

PS Also used same ploy to make 'pillows' for squirming into tight but
uncomfortable corners...........

Jim,
It's about time to consider antennas for A055. Can you provide
specifics on the antennas you used and provide contact info to
contacting Bob Archer. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi! Kingsley.
I used a piece of plastic rain guttering of the appropriate radius with some
grit paper glued to it. Actually it was so usefull I fixed a block type
handle to the concave side. Don't think a flexible item will give you
continuity of curves.

Hi Chuck,
Yes I'll send you some details, do you have a fax number? My
detail sheet is full and to retype it is a pain. I'm asking $66K with
all my extras. Let me know.

This thread has spun off to a couple of nice ones: aerobatics and maybe
finding Pops a nice flying mono and a buyer for Jim. Great. Since i
started it with my to build or not to build quandary, I want to thank
everyone again for their thoughtful and insightful comments, and i want
let you know the status of my predicament. One of the ideas that came
from the thread was to approach Flightcrafters about finishing the
plane for me, or at least getting me much further along if don't have
the time. Well, after a couple of nice conversations with Bob Berube,
i have decided to go this route. They are very accommodating of my
needs to spread the expense out and not dedicate so much of my time to
the project. I will transport it to them and spend time working on it
there when i can, happy with the knowledge that when i am busy with my
sound mixing work, work will be progressing on the kit with expert
hands.
I am thrilled that i have found a way to keep the progress going to get
me in the pilot's seat of the wonderful europa, without the sacrifices
i thought it would entail. Thanks to all and keep up the great
community that this list is.
See you in Florida!

--> Europa-List message posted by: Christine and Peter Timm <cptimm@telus.net>
Once again I have the pleasure of announcing to the forum another First
Flight. Alex Bawman flew his Europa XS C-GGHY today out of Nanaimo Airport
on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.
Some of you will remember his kit from when it was on display at Arlington a
few years ago. Alex has installed a CAM 100 Honda engine with a modified
cowling as well as some streamlining around the wheel well which makes his
plane distinctive in appearance.
Prior to his First Flight, Alex took the opportunity to bone up on the
monowheel's handling characteristics when I flew my Classic over on a couple
of fine days. Besides giving Alex a chance to get 'current' before flying
his own aircraft it gave me the opportunity to see what a great job he has
done on his project. We admired the excellent workmanship and the artistic
paint job and look forward to flying with him very soon.
Cheers,
Peter Timm
