Apologies if you got this already but my outgoing mail seems to be having a
problem at my ISP
Hi all - it's big smile time!
G-IANI (Kit 505, Trigear, 914, Airmaster 332, weight 910lbs) flew for the
first time at Blackbushe Airport at 13.45 on Thursday 20th May 2004. In the
very capable hands of Pete Jeffers she performed two takeoffs and landings
with a total time of just under 1 hour. Weather was high overcast, about 18
Celsius, fairly strong cross wind at times.
She flies nicely but may need just a touch of rudder trim. She stalls
straight and level at the correct speeds with a nice little buffet before
the stall. By pure luck the (factory option) stall warner seems to be set
perfectly. Pitch trim is OK but could be a bit more positive (I will talk
to Andy).
Engine is smooth but static RPM at full throttle is lowish so the fine pitch
stop needs to be reduced just a little. Ts &Ps are mostly OK but water
temperature is high in a full power climb (I believe this is normal at
first).
Everything seems to work but the radio (Apollo SL40) is annoying as we are
hearing too much hiss. Hopefully this will be solved when I manage to
master its multiple digital settings. Fortunately Pete is used to the Grand
Rapids EIS so I think we have mastered its digitals.
Build time was almost exactly three years and 2,200 person hours of workshop
time. This includes everything including eight mods (four factory and four
own design including centre tunnel and moving the rudder pedals), building
the panel and wiring (my choice), final filling and painting (not my choice)
and upholstery (including debugging and documenting the Europa Kit).
My thanks go to Irene, my wife and co-builder, Raymond Beattie (my
brother-in-law) who has the filling and painting skills I cannot aspire to.
Many thanks also to all at the Europa Factory and the Europa Club committee,
members and e-mail contributors who have been a source of inspiration,
support and great knowledge.
When can I start on the next one?

Folks,
I have a question on this theme.
I have a copy of the approved PFA mod for the Navaid installation. However,
I have chosen the Digitrak servo having been influenced by some of the
e-mail strings over the last year or so. The servo looks well made but I
haven't tested it yet. My intention is to install the digitrak servo by
following the method approved for the Navaid. Has anyone in the UK done this
already? Does this require a full PFA mod application?

Many congratulations Ian and Irene, and nice to get such a full report. I was beginning
to wonder whether I had missed your first flight announcement.
I also had to install a tiny trim tab on the rudder. My SL40 is working fine, without
any modifications.
Many happy flights, Karl

The Digitrak installation does require formal PFA mod approval, but all you
need to do is to highlight the areas in which your installation will differ
from the Navaid.
If you like, I could fax or email you copies of the two letters I wrote to
get my Digitrak
approved.
Even though I kept the size of the access holes in the seat the same as for
the
Navaid, but merely moved them forward a bit, the PFA did ask for a letter of
no
technical objection from Europa. Andy kindly provided this letter, but
pointed out that
the access holes would require reinforcement to at least the standard
described in the
Europa manual. He also pointed out that there are 3 plies of glasscloth in
the thigh
support area.

A further piece of fuel system trivia may be of interest.
I substituted the kit supplied fuel filters with an Andair gascolator
during my initial build. The Andair is mounted adjacent to the fuel pump
and has performed satisfactorily. I see a minimal amount of trash during
routine maintenance checks.
However, I did have a minor problem. I installed water drains from the
fuel tank as per the factory option and I also fitted a similar water
drain from the Andair bowl. Each of these goes to individual CAV-110
drain valves on the lower fuselage. I have found that fine trash from
the Andair collects on the face of the drain valve 'O' ring and causes a
very slow weep which has left a stain on the paintwork. The fix has been
to put one of the original cartridge filters between the Andair bowl and
the drain valve. No problems now - no drips.
Cheers, John

I deleted the information about the June fly in in Tenn. Where is it, and what
commercial airports are near? It looks like we will need to come commercial
unless someone in FL has a couple of seats open. We are anxious to go, sounds
like a great time!

As many of you may recall, the Discovery Wings channel did a whole series on building
a Eurpoa monowheel. I saw a segment this morning where he is doing a tri-gear.
The series is listed in the guide as being a Kit Fox, but the airplane
he is building does not look like any Kit Fox I have ever seen.
Does anyone know if the tape segment that contains the actual building can be obtained?
It would be a great help as an overview before you start any major steps.
The segment this morning was the landing gear, and I wish I had seen it
before I did mine.

Well, the top is finally on...took approximately 3.5 Hrs with 2 of us working on
it (only about 1 hr to actually redux and screw it down). Had to move a little
faster towards the end as it's about 92 Deg F (33C) here in Phoenix with approximately
11% Humidity and it was starting to set up fast.Used 324 grams of
redux and removed 91 grams as I cleaned up the sides. Used 97 self tapping screws.
No more boat in the workshop.

Hi! Paddy.
Unfortunately I already decided to go the other way to Cark and hesitated to
call it a Drop of the Hat day being a Sunday !
However I had originally expected to go to the PFA Rally at Perth since my
wall chart indicated it to be this weekend! It is now next weekend, don't
know when it was changed but I now have the first two days of it
"earmarked".

I asked TruTrak to provide me with a schematic. Don't know if it works, for I
have not done my wiring yet. I'll send you an email off forum attaching the

Makes more sense than the last version published, which seemed to cause the
servo amp. to fail.
Not that a light is needed anyway; the LED display is sunlight readable and
does a good job of informing on A/P status.
